I think it is a mixture of polyu, oil and something else. I reckon 2-3 coats of wipe-on poly and then Ubeaut wax is a winner. A lot of us will agree with me.

Wongo, is there a specific brand that you use or is it your own concoction?

I am always happy with their service.

I have been working on the second desk. The wood is Sydney blue gum from Studley's value packs.

I still need to make 5 drawers and the top. Not sure if would dovetail the drawers. It is pretty tough to do with blue gum. (I think I will though)

    Undie,

I am not a big fan of through dovetails, not for a drawer anyway. I always do half blind.

I don’t have a problem cutting the dovetails. The problem is chiselling the hardwood pin boards. It is not fun.

    Hi Scott,
I have only just caught up with the silky oak desk. Looks fantastic . And the drawers. The dovetails look as tight as . With skill and chisel control like that you could have been a brain surgeon.
    Cheers

Wongo, if you're doing half blind dovetails, mark out and make the cuts for the pins, then take most of the waste out with a handheld router.

    Nice desk, BTW.

    Alex,

That is not bad idea. I usually just use a forstner bit on a drill press to remove some waste. I think a router will remove a lot more waste. Thanks master.

It does make it a lot easier. With a bit of effort I had 3 drawers done already.

    Default silky 'oaks'

    Hey Scott.....

You should see some of the northern silky oak Mal has in stock now....
Great grain, more defined, colour is more 'yellow' than pink.....
    Just a thought.....

    GREAT DESK.

It was great to see what eventuated from half a dozen rough sawn boards that fitted into the boot of my car.....

See you tomorrow, we'll see if we can find something for another project.

    Regards

    Greg
