I enjoy making drawers. It is the time I can use a lot of hand tools. But they do take a long time to make as each drawer is made and fitted individually. I think drawers deserve a lot of attention.
I have a small dilemma at the moment. I am not sure if I should make my own drawer handles or just buy some brass knobs from Bunnings. I prefer to make my own but I just can’t think of a good design. Hmm…Visit my website at www.myFineWoodWork.com

Brass knobs should be made illegal on quality fine contemporary furniture. Your desk is to good for such rubbish.
A Krenov style handle would look the goods on your desk. It would give it the final touch of handmade uniquiness that the desk deserves. The one below i ripped off from him (im sure he wont be to fussed ) and its easy to make. Up to you, but i reckon it would set the desk off fantastic.

Very nice desk, Wongo. You must be very pleased. Attractive and useful.

Another piece of fine furniture. You get better and better.
With respect to Lignum, I think brass or maybe other metal fittings can look great. They set off the wood giving a contrast that draws the eye to timber.
Using Lignum's sideboard as an example, I would have considered using dull silver or pewter fittings. Lovely piece Ligs.
Not the chintzy crap from Bunnings (although you can sometimes find a knob that will serve) but maybe a more period piece.
I think your desk could run the risk of looking a bit dowdy and dull with wooden handles, some contrast would be far more attractive.
If you're set on making them yourself, you can come and use my metal lathe etc when the new shed is complete and I have the metalwork shop set up.Bodgy

Thanks Lignum and bodgy. I am thinking of something black. Ebony would be nice but I don’t have any. I think black handles will go really well with the blue gum.
Oh no, I don’t know what to do.Visit my website at www.myFineWoodWork.com

What about getting some brass handles and chucking them in the fire to give them that nice patina?
Cheers

ISTR that there was a recent magazine article (this year in, I think, AWR or Australian Woodsmith, more likely the former) which had some interesting carved curved handles, which might suit.
A quick look on the websites didn't find the article I was thinking of, but I will have a look when I get home.Cheers

I had the same dilemma with my blackwood desk.
In the end I used some aged brass knobs from th Hardware Co. in Sydney.
They have a good selection.
My worry was making a wooden knob that was strong enough and didn't look chuncky..
Black timber knobs would suit your bluegum. Trend and Anagote will have pieces of Wenge and small boards of African blackwood that is very similar to ebony.
Andy Rae has a couple of nice ebony handles in his book and his tool cabinet, if you want some more ideas.
Think of all the tools you can use making the wooden drawer handles.Scally

Go on Wongo, make your own looks much nicer. You dont need to use screws when you make your own. I wedge a dowel through the drawer face, and attach the pull that way
No excuses Wongo
Lignum, I like the drawer pulls, very nice I'd like to seea closer shot of the krenov style pull.
