Default WIP Pics - Playground Cubby

Here are some pics and initial plans (not necessarily accurate - my design kinda evolved during construction) for a cubby/fort playground structure I'm currently working on.

It is basically a raised platform just under 2.4m wide by about 2m deep 1.6 m off the ground.
On the platform is a small ready-made kit cubby house that I bought from DealsDirect.
I have decked the lower level with Merbau and the upper level with 19mm Film Faced ply which acts as a semi-waterproof roof and floor.
Longer term I may enclose the lower level room and add windows/doors etc. My 8yo son also wants a trapdoor & ladder to the upstairs cubby room (no promises here as I have to consider safety for my 2yo).

My next decision to make is to choose the external cladding to use when I complete the lower level.
My criteria is that it must:
    1) look fairly similar to the painted timber on the upper deck (i'll paint it the same colour)
    2) be weatherproof. My 8yo will no doubt want to use it for sleepouts
    3) Not cost too much

I'm also wondering where affordable perspex/clear plastic (for windows) can be sourced.
I am in north-west Sydney if anyone knows good suppliers.

    Any advice would be appreciated!
    Thanks.. Steve

Don't pass them by! Be daring and caring!

Dampen their misery....sit with them and talk a little.

Buy them something to eat and a tram fare to a local mission.
I'm so lucky that I've somewhere to live and have family support.

    Thanks rgum.
Good point about the roof. I was considering adding a row of bird spikes to stop the local Myna birds from using it as a perch. They tend to sit there and eye off the neigbour's dog bowl. Perhaps some spikes might also deter kids from venturing up there.

You should put the trampaline (dont know how to spell it ) right next to the cubby so he can kind of step out onto it, if that makes sense, or is it too high?

Amazing! I wish whoever built my house would have done as good a job.

Kids should get a lot of miles out of that. Well done.

Default How Did You Level Ground Screw Post Support?

    Hi gib802,

    Good day!

Just curious about how did you manage to maintain the Ground Screw Post Support as levelled as possible?

Looking from the photos that you've posted, they look really pretty levelled. Amazing job!

The reason that I'm asking is that I've just screwed a couple earlier and was not really successful in getting them as level as one would want them to be...

    Thanks!
    Archie

Nice work gib802 I've been meaning to post my own cubby house pix. I'll see if I can dig them up.

How much $$ did the slippery slide set you back?

Looks great, gib. Be sure you can get in to sweep out the spiders in spring and summer.

Instead of cladding the lower part, you might consider stringing ropes in a square pattern (like on an old sailing ship) on a couple of 'walls' to define the area and give the boys something else to play on.

Yeah, I have the same one (different vendor = 'ozcubbies' i think). That's about what I paid. Not cheap for a chunk of plastic I thought!

    Default Which wood

    Hi Gib

Great job, and thank you for sharing your pictures and design. Was just wondering:
    - which type of wood did you use for the posts, frame, stairs, etc..?
    - was it soft or hard wood?
    - was it treated or not (CCA, ACQ, LOSP)?
    - H3 or H4 Grade?
    - Did the Merbau bleed (i assume you bought it from bunnings)?
    - Did you add any protective layer? (Oiling, staining, weather protection, etc.. )
    - How is the house now after 3 years

    Thanks Ash
