Default [WIP] First Piece of Furniture

This is my first attempt at a piece of furniture, a bedside table to replace the cardboard box belonging to my stereo that I've been using for the last 2 years.

Silver Ash and Jarrah, hand-cut (*groan!*) dovetails for the drawers, blind keyed mitres and blind keyed butt joints for the frame/top.

The frame/top still needs to be sanded/scraped (damn you reversing silver-ash!) and finish applied. I am thinking Ubeaut blonde shellac + wax.

Any ideas for the drawer pulls/knobs/handles?

Edit: Oh, the things on the top are the drawer slide thingies, they will get attached to the drawers as soon as I get few more big enough clamps.

Love the open design, and the contrasting timbers. Your design?

I would do the drawer pulls in the contrast darker timber with a horizontal linear theme to match the bold stripes across the top. Maybe even going all the way across the drawer fronts.

    Have a greenie.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

    Looking good Scissors!

I'll go with Zenwood on the Jarrah drawer pulls. Make sure you post pics of the finished project!

What are you going to do with the old stereo box? Use it as a coffee table for a few months?

Thanks for the kind words. The design is my own, inspired by a few pieces I have seen that have had 'skeletal' type frames. I was thinking of doing pulls ala Lignum in his Krenov inspired cabinet, but that would mean more tools.

EDIT: Funny you should mention that Felder! I (seriously!) have no coffee table at the moment, it was next on the building list!

GREAT! Use it as a coffee table until you get around to building one. Then you can use it as a work bench in your workshop until you see how NewLou's project finishes up. Then use it as a rocking horse before asking Wongo for advice!

Better still, send in pics of where your stereo box is on any given day and we can all try and guess your next project!

Great work - can't wait to see your next update.

I wonder how long the trusty cardboard box will last?

Looking good. Good choice of timbers, I'm presently in the process of continually stuffing up a small chest in the same. Time spent with the scraper on the SA will pay off - it glows.

Fantastic work, great design - something a bit different. I too would go for contrasting handles.

Great design and i love the contrasting timbers especially that silver ash.
With me just being a bit of a newbie may I ask a couple of possibly silly sounding questions? No hang on I will do a search first.

    Great job

    Almost done!

Still need to attach handles and finish (ended up just using traditional wax over a couple of coats of sanding sealer) the drawers and the pieces the drawers run in (oh, and glue those into position.)

Pics are sort of not the best, stupid lighting... the top has a nice lustrous sheen.

Terrific first up piece Scissors With the Jarrah handles, id like to see the continuation of the jarrah drawer runners to the end of the sides then around the face of the drawer to form a handle. It would give a frame with in a frame. Try it with scrap and blue tac first and post a pic here to see what others think. It might look ok, but might also look to busy. Worth a look
