Hi all,
This is where I am up to. I am definetley slowing down as it's my first furniture project, I am taking longer to do things.
I am going to do a checker board base for the drawer as I had some off cuts around the shop so I decided not to waste them.
Pic 1 - Rough sawn Red Cedar and White Beech for the bottom shelf
Pic 2 - Cut down to rough size
Pic 3 - Flattening one face of the Cedar (same down to the white beech)
Pic 4- Running the Cedar through the thicknesser (same down to the white beech)
Pic 5- Piecs cut to size
I did have a pic of the glue up but it turned out horrible
Pic 6- Scaps for the checker board drawer base
Pic 7- Pieces of cedar and kauri (resawn) with dominos. I used domis because the thicknesses of the pieces were different.
Pic 8- Glue up number 1 of 2, Tomorrow i'll rip them up to form the check board pattern.
Pic 9- Table sanded at 240. Mostly done to check the piece. I did however find some little dents.
- Is the water and iron trick the best for this, or is there another method?
Hope you enjoy.
Comments very welcome - Regards, Andy

Looking good Gro, there's nothing wrong with going slow, take your time, and leave hurrying for the pros.
The time we enjoy wasting is not wasted time.

Coming along nicely. Can I suggest you keep some of your off-cuts to try your finishes on? Looking forward to seeing the top being put together. You've got some lovely looking timber.
cheers,
ajw

Hey,
Its been a quiet week in the garage all week. I'm hoping to resaw the cedar for the top and glue it up by tonight. Tomorrow I'm aiming to make the buttons and finish off the drawer.
I'll post some pics of my progress tomorrow evening.

Hi all,
Here are some pics of the table top.
Pic 1 - running through the jointer (no pics of the thicknesser)
Pic 2 - Resawing - I took very light passes and eventually got there
Pic 3 - a couple of mm left to cut with a handsaw - much safer than to risk the two boards caving in on the final pass
Pic 4 - book matched boards
Pic 5 - dominos for alligment
Pic 6 - cooking in the clamps
Tomorrow i'll get the rectangle inlay, buttons and drawer completed. It hasn't taken as long as I thought, but I don't want to rush to get it finished - I still have plenty of time until christmas.

Pretty impressive.
How thick did the cedar boards end up at after you split them and thicknessed them? They seemed to process pretty well.

About 15mm - I put the top on before to see what it looked like and it seemed fine. I'll post a pic in a few hours.
