Thread: WIP - Red Cedar Hall Table

Top work Andy, soon Wongo will have a competitor.......

It's great for me to see what rough sawn or slabbed boards turn into.
Wongo's chairs were once 4 rosewood slabs, and this red cedar table that was once only a few rough sawn red cedar boards will also become an heirloom piece of work.

Great WIP Andy. I can see this is going to be one very nice red cedar table. I will be looking on with much interest

Looking forward to seeing your progress with this. Looks like you're off to a great start, and you've got some lovely timber to work with there.

Take lots of pictures, and don't get too frustrated if/when the stuff-up fairies visit.

Great progress. The finished table will look awesome. Also good to see little bits of your workshop.

I spent a short while in the workshop tonight.
I put dominos in the front aprons and did a try fit. Not much progress tonight, but hopefully over the weekend i'll get a fair bit done. (Post Sunday night)
Please note the timber needs a good clean up, I was playing around with some finishes and a bit got on the cedar.

The last two pics are of some wild grain qld maple (purchased off Greg) and some red cedar that I got from the Canberra show. I am thinking of doing something different with the top and would greatly appreciate your feedback.

Please excuse the dodgy pics. The markings I used on paint are very rought, and obviouslly if i were to go with either one they would be even and measure up square.
Pic 1- dominos installed
Pic 2- dry assembly
Pic 3 - wild grain qld maple
Pic 4- red cedar
Pic 4- have the wild grain maple or red cedar where its yellow (floating panel) ??
Pic 5- a simple square inlay with white white beech, or some other light timber ??
Pic 6- 3 inlay stripes, again in either white beech or some other light timber ??

Comments on your preferred top would be greatly received

Thanks for the feedback. I initially planned to have the rectangle inlay, but I've been second guessing my decision.

Today I glued the bottom rails, drawer support rail and lastly glued up everything. I'll post photos later today.

As promied here are some pics of today.

Pic 1 - Cutting the drawer rails to size
Pic 2 - Dominos plunged (I got domi happy and plunged an extra one)
Pic 3- Dry fit
Pic 4 - Glueing up the drawers rails
Pic 5- Easing the edges on the legs - next time I won't bother setting up the router, a hand plane and sandpaper will do the job
Pic 6- Easing the edges
Pic 7- Glueing up the frame
Pic 8- Joinery for the drawer (kauri pine) - i'll have the fingers showing when the drawer is open, something different than dovetails.

The frame is in need of a good sanding, it's looking very grubby with the pencil and glue marks.
