Martix, I think the grill makes the unit a bit more interesting. Thanks for your feedback, it is an honest opinion. It shows that we all see things differently and have different taste.

OK it is almost there. The handles were made and installed. Drawer stops were added so the children can’t pull them out and hurt themselves.

This week I will buy the glass shelves, wax the drawer runners, buff the top with wax and it will be ready by Saturday.

The unit is heavy, very heavy. It will be a big job to get it into the house. But it is ok, the drawers, doors and top will come off so it is not too bad.

    Hi Wongo
When I asked you to estimate the weight of your unit ,it was a serious question and not posed to take the --ss out of you .I would like to do something similar and weight is something I need to consider these days . Not that I am losing strength , it's just that my 75year old wife is having trouble keeping her end up .

Peter, it must be at least 100 to 150 kg.

    Hi Wongo,

Impressive cabinet there mate. I reckon you have got the dimensions and proportions spot on, looks great. Particularly like the curved legs.

Know a mate that paid $3000 to get a Jarrah one built, (a bit taller) but no where near as good looking as yours. Well done.

    Cheers

That is an impressive TV cabinet Wongo.

Have you decided if you will add a support leg or two under the middle?

I am making a similar size cabinet out of celery top pine. Different joiney. Same question.

I think it will be strong enough not to need a centre leg even though most of the weight is in the centre of the cabinet.

Good luck carrying it into the lounge room.

    Scally,

My TV is very heavy. It must be close to 60-70kg. I think I will add a small block at back end anyway. The block will not be visible so it is probably a good idea.

    Wongo
My thought was to add a long board, the length of the two doors.
Place it halfway between the front and back, under the doors.
or run it the full length of the cabinet?
    This would suit my design.

The single block sounds better for your cabinet.

    Thanks Scott .
You will definitely need some centre support . It would be a tragedy to see your cabinet looking like the under side of a broken down old horse in a few years time

yes fair enough. Now that you have those handles on, the grills blend in much better. You've hit the spot with design and proportions. Love the curved legs.

Just out of curiosity, what are the grills made of? Looks like veneered MDF?

    Beautiful work wongo.
The handles and grill complement the cabinet perfectly.
I can't even begin to imagine the patience you have must have to tackle a job like the grill in the first place (Big pat on the back).
How did you construct the bottom panel? Is it all mortice and tennon joinery or did you cut a rebate and glue the boards down onto it?
Why did you go this route as opposed to a solid, biscuited panel?
Sorry for the questions but I'd love to tackle something like this in the near future and am just looking at all methods and possibilities.

    Cheers,

    Evan

Crikey! That must have been some job. I take it you've got a few router bits now that need a good sharpening?
