Thanks, I try my best to get them looking as good as I can. The long wooden swords in my photo page - I did not make them. They are just some of the wooden swords that I own. The long ones in that photo are of many different styles for different martial arts using wooden swords e.g. Aikido, Iaido,Kenjutsu (the art of swordsmanship). In Kendo they use a practice sword made from slats of bamboo called a Shinai. But once again, thanks for the compliments.

Hiya dai sensei,
Thanks the finish is Organoil danish oil the timber is spotted gum. Yep that Katana is a live one not the it didn't last long before it started to go blunt only 3 months of tameshigiri (test cutting) on green bamboo i was alittle upset but i could never get rid of it being my first live blade. Are you into martial arts as well dai sensei?
Thanks

A lot of my gear got stolen when I went O/S, including my live blade, just have the display model now. Often thought about sharpening it, but it wouldn't be the same, steel is probably crap.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

DO NOT USE THIS SWORD. I know people who have swung display swords and the blade came loose and left the handle entirely. It might be marginally safer to swim in the sea with a piece of steak tied to your chest...
Again, you probably wouldn't but I just thought I would say this to be safe.

This is not a display it was a cheaper line of training swords for martial arts not a cheap (brittle) stainless steel copy. It is made from string steel a safely check was always made before i used it as always should be. I have some story about a man when the pins came out of the hilt (tsuka) and the sword hitting his watch son this was a man had 30 years of iaido under his belt very sad story. Also another sad story about a brittle stainless steel sword use for a display two kids playing with it and the blade broke at the hilt hit the other kid in the chest. And i'd swing a sword just like a boxer never swings a punch.
Thanks,

I was actually referring to Dai Sensei's comment about sharpening his display sword.
As for removing your tsuka, if it is glued on a slight heat (not enough to lose temper on the steel) should break the glue bond.
Mind you, it might never be the same again, so I would consider this carefully.
However, if the sword is made for cutting, it is a shame to leave it blunt.
There is another forum called swordforum which has a bit on eastern weapons and I am sure that someone there could give you advice on your metal weapons. I doubt that they would be much use on wooden weapons though.
Good to see that you are still around - and especially good to see that you are posting the pics as promised!!

Those are beautiful swords Alastair. Do you really use them? Or for display only? The biggest real blades I have seem were in the Tsukiji Fish Markets where they use a very long blade to section the Tuna. I have a couple of Japanese blades. One is the 30cm Chefs blade for vegetables. It lets you slice cabbage really finely, the shorter heavy fish blade and the the longer 25cm blade for fish.

Sorry for the miss understanding there silly me jumping the gun. I have another sword that i got from a company in japan call tozando cuts well and holds an edge the other sword just has a place in my heart the first time i could get a live blade and but wooden swords are my passion. When it comes to real swords i love and have many chinese swords i also have a bare chinese tai chi blade waiting for handles and fittings that i will make soon just don't know what timber i should use was looking at hard wood for the handle and some kind of soft or light wood for the scabbard i will be sure to post pics when i'm done. I love the forum lots of info and great people as well i always like to share what i know as do the people on the forum.
Thanks again,

Fair enough.
I might take up some kind of Eastern MA when I move to Seattle (I gotta make friends somehow)!
I have considered Tai Chi, but I think that Kendo is more my style. that all being said, I would prefer Savate French Kickboxing) over them all, but they don't use swords, they use canes - and all kinds of other weird things.
