Default A zigzag recliner - the prototype, unfinished

Here are a couple of pics of a zigzag reclining chair I designed. This is the prototype; I have made some minor changes for the final version - in the final version I have used 35 x 45 stock for the Z-assemblies, instead of 35 x 50, and I have made the plugs for the dowel and screw holes out of dark jarrah instead of matching wood. These changes should make the chair a bit springier, and add some visual interest. I have also made the arms 30 mm longer, so as to move the seat/back assembly backwards a little.

To make the asymmetrical Z-assemblies I used 25° mitres for the feet, and 20° mitres for the arms. The seat/back assembly is screwed to the upper stretcher, dowelled to the legs, and screwed and dowelled to the arms. The back rails are bent laminations, using four 6 mm laminations in each. The backslats are also bent laminations, consisting of two 4mm laminations each. They are made of jarrah, and the rest of the chair is rose gum.

The mitres are reinforced by an alignment domino and three locking tenons, as in my zigzag dining chair. The seat is inclined at 10° to the horizontal, and the back stles are at 98° to the seat side rails.
