Can you explain that a little more, is it drawn on sandpaper or is the sandpaper used as a texture medium behind the picture while being drawn?
Or am I missing the point totaly... is it sand paper as in sanding paper or just a name for a type of drawing paper?

Harry, it is fair dink-um sandpaper.
The stuff they call pastel sticks you probably know as 'cray pas'
The sandpaper tears the colour off the stick to leave a thicker brighter finish.

My goodness - thanks so much you guys!

Yeah, Shedhand - how times have changed - and I'm only 41!! I remember this old guy visited us once on our farm, went for a walk with a gun, and brought home a roast leg for us - him being adamant it was plains turkey, but it was brolga. Mum cooked it to keep him happy, but it was so dry the meat turned whitish as you cut it & we couldn't even eat it (and we weren't allowed to be fussy!)

Thanks Auld Bassoon - keep those digits crossed, please! I'll need it! I will let you all know. I don't expect to win anything, but it would be nice if a couple of them at least sell (all works have to be for sale). A couple I am doing I want to keep (portrait of our eldest daughter playing piano in the spotlight, and one of my hubby reading to our son - both to do, yet), so I'll just over price those two!

Thanks Cliff - I was hoping you'd get to read my message! It won't look much like the pic you posted but you'll see what I mean when I get it done!

Thanks Jow - I'll check that site out. Your wife does fantastic work!

Thanks Al...and good to see you're still living up to your reputation!!

Thanks, Chris - good to see you here, again!

Thanks Harry - Pastel sticks are pure pigment bound with a little gum - much like chalk, but finer. These are what they call 'soft pastels' (artists' quality), but you can also get oil pastels (like Craypas ones). It is fair dinkum 'wet and dry' sandpaper (Prager tools brand, to be precise!)....and like Cliff said, it gives a surface with a 'tooth', which is perfect for pastels.

Cheers and thanks, all of you!

Thanks Sam - here's the latest effort - Glasses man. I still have to sign and frame it - just waiting on Comments and Critique on an art forum.

This guy is huge - the board is 700 x 500 mm (see I AM a woodworker - mm - and when I'm in sewing mode I speak in cm, when I say my height I speak in inches!!), so a single lens is the size of an adult's head!

    Cheers,

    Jill

My thoughts immediately went to Ray Orbisson (pretty woman etc.) on seeing your latest creation.

By the way Wet Canvas has over 30.000 members and a section for most art genres.

Dont tell Ozwinner tho', I know which page he would be heading for.

All good efforts to be sure Jill, but as Pope I can't lie.
The better work is coming from a younger member of the family, the proof of which proudly hangs on my wall. Please keep going though, you'll get there.

(quickly ducks at this point, I feel a lump of sawn jarrah coming my way
(oh hell, she's on to me already)

Lol, Wayne! You know - that calf STILL hasn't arrived! The heifer is getting very anti-social, though - staying away from the other cattle, so I suspect it won't be long. Better not be, as she has loads of milk!

    Cheers,

    Jill
