    Nice.
Looks like it might be good for a snork too with the waves breaking on the reef.

They're the bow waves formed by the Great Whites cruising just offshore!

    Default Smoke in the suburbs.

Here's a classic Australian scene. Smoke from a small bushfire photographed (10 minutes ago) from my patio over next door's roof.

We came to Perth on holiday in 1983. Our first time in Australia. One evening, Bel and I took the kids - who were 5 and 2 at the time, up to Kings Park to see the city from up high. There was a big fire front all along the ridge line on the Darling Ranges. It made a spectacular backdrop to the view of the Swan River and the city of Perth.

We absolutely fell in love with the place on that trip and when I was offered a job here in 1986 it took us about 10 seconds to say yes. We have never regretted that decision for a moment.

Fire and flood and distance and huge empty blue skies. Mate, I love this country. I've found my home.

I was eagerly awaiting this week so that I could post some pictures of Pambula Beach. So what happens? The weather turns to shyte and it's grey and overcast every day I might have to dig out some old ones, is that acceptable?

Yeah, I think so. Some of the other pictures have been from the past.

Here are a couple of happy snaps taken when my Fire Brigade went out to Grenfell (NSW) to help out earlier this year. Photography itself isn't that spectacular, but I thought I would share them anyway. Anyone give me suggestions for photgraphing fire? At night? With reflective stuff all over trucks and uniforms?

The first photo was taken from the passenger seat of the Warrimoo Bushfire Brigade Category 1 Tanker, about 20kms from Grenfell.

The other three are taken at the fire front, with the Warrimoo tanker (pic 2), the Wentworth Falls tanker (pic 3) and a random fire-fighter (pic 4).

Doesn't qualify for the competition, but (shrug?)

    Hi Felder,

The photos are amazing. I personally really like the reflective lines on the protective gear - I'd have trouble spotting the firies without it.

    cheers

    Brendan,
how on earth do you find time to take happy snaps on the fire ground? I see some spectacular photo opportunities but am usually too busy wrestling with a hose or talking on radios or phones (or sometimes several at the same time) to even think about having a camera with me. One of these days I'll get a small cheap digital that I can slip in my pocket (current camera is pretty big) and maybe a few more hands on the fire ground and just maybe I can snap some pics.

Could be a few ways to answer your question, Mick.

    1. I am a better and more efficient fire-fighter than you and therefore have time to take happy snaps.

    2. I am a much lazier fire-fighter than you and would rather spend time behind the lens than putting the wet stuff on the hot stuff.

    3. I hire a professional photographer to follow me wherever I go so that when I write my memoirs I will have some photos to accompany the words.

Seriously though - we got a brand new tanker just before Xmas (beeauuuutiful it is) and decided to buy a cheapie digital camera to chuck in the glove box. This is the first fire our truck and camera went to and was therefore the first attempt at taking some snaps. Most of the time we were too busy to take photos (or at least whenever anything exciting happened) but we managed to squeeze off a couple. Most of them were absolute crud as they were just: point, shoot, hope......and on with the job. But we got a few goodens out of it.

Haven't got the camera wet yet. Surely only a matter of time.

On a separate note we had a video camera with us when we had big fires in the Blue Mountains, Christmas 2001. Got some excellent footage, but again we were usually too busy when the real spectacular stuff happened.
