Question Australian Pictures with Lightning at Sunset

 I am having a terrible time finding out who took this picture. I would like to use it as a background. However, I do not want to find out later that I should have gotten some type of permission. Does anyone know who took this picture? Thank you.

In Australia we call this phenomena the "Thunderbox Implosion" - very common in the outback.

That is an absolutely spectacular picture. I live in Texas and you just don't get shots like that here. I can't believe that kind of beauty is common somewhere. Don't take that for granted.
The only decent picture I have taken of lightning was from a van window in the middle of the night during a road trip. You can see some rain drops on the window but it is my only shot with the lightning hitting the ground.
Thank you for the permission. You are fantastic!

Umm, hate to say this but I don't think it was our mate Gumby who took that photo. I think he was being a smarty pants.

That image is hosted at http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/...mgid=123967612. Maybe there is a way of contacting them and finding out who the photographer was.

    G'day Wendy,
Just to clear up a furphy or two in regards to the image that you have inquired about. Gumby DID NOT take this picture. I came across it whilst skating the net about three years age. I think that it was on a web site from West Australia. I tried to locate the person who took the photo without any success. I did download it for use on my computer as a wall paper. When Ian007 created the Sunset Images thread I decided to post it ( after much deliberation ) as I believe that it is a very powerful image & defines for me the powerful energy & harsh beauty of my country. I thought that it would fit in with the theme of the post.
When I was resizing the image to submit to the thread, ( I think, not real sure about that. {Edit. No it was later, after I had posted .} ) I somehow managed to decompile the image into three separate images, or layers, each loosely connected. The image that you now see is a compilation of three pictures, & whilst it remains a very powerful image, it is not an accurate portrayal of the actual event. I think that it was generated with Photoshop or similar.
I found this to be very disappointing as I believe that Australia is beautiful enough to be portayed as it is without enhancing, or falsifying the beauty.
To all concerned, I am most profoundly sorry for any misconception or strife that I have caused.
I am still trying to locate the owner of this image, also without any luck so far.
    Regards,
    Barry.

    Hi Wendy,
I think you should contact the Canberra Times at www.canberratimes.com.au. That photo was taken by a Canberra local in January 2003, and was believed to be the lighting strike that started the 2003 bushfire which destroyed some 400 homes.
I don't think you'll have any trouble using it for private purposes. Good luck...

There seems to be a lot of smoke already in the pic, so I cant see it being the strike that done it.

    G'day gumby,
No offence intended mate, If by chance the original author of this picture comes forward & starts a shemozzle over copyright etc. you could have ended up in the poo by claiming ownership of the picture & I don't want that! If It does turn to merde, I'm the one who should cop the blame. I don't pass the buck & walk away from my responsibilities.
Johnno, I think that the pictures were taken somewhere in the top end of W.A. in about 2001 / 2002 from what little info I have been able to glean.

    Regards,
    Barry,

Mate, if that's what we've come to in this world, then it's a crying shame.

i admit i am slow to get to things.

That lightning looks too small in relation to the bush it is striking and the smoke cloud, and the smoke cloud looks like it ought to be in front of the lightning so that the bottom of the lightning would be obscured by smoke haze and trees.

But there is some bloke in Qld who takes for real lightning shots just as good. Can't recall his site though google might help.
    http://downunderchase.com/photogallery/lightning01.html is quite good.

http://www.crystalinks.com/lightning.html uses the original one you were in pursuit of Wendy.

    http://www.kenduncan.com/gallery.php...code=PJ145-STD

has a few images of lightning for only $25,000, he said with a choking sound.

    G'day Tashammer,
In regards to the picture that you have commented on, please refer to my post early in this thread. I believe that it was originally called "Firestarter, Pilbara" or similar.
I've included the decompiled image. I do not know how I managed to do this as I was not using any graphic image programs at the time & in fact I am a total klutz when it comes to doing anything with Photoshop or similar.
    Regards,
    Barry.
