    Default Cactus flower

This flower comes from a cactus that flowers once a year usually at night and by morning the flower is a limp rag. After several years of waiting and hoping I managed to catch it in the act.

Congrats! Not an easy feat to accomplish! Lovely flower, are you going to frame the photo?

    Cheers

    Thanks Wendy.

What I really wanted to do is photograph a sequence of the flower opening. The day before I took these photos I could see the bud was well developed and so planned to stay up that night to photograph it opening. By about 11:30pm that evening nothing had changed so I set an alarm to try and get a couple of hours sleep. I ended sleeping though the alarm and woke up at around 4 am and raced outside where the flower was in full bloom. I then proceeded to take 52 photos over a one hour period. So my problem is which of the 52 photos do I frame?

BTW the flower stayed in full bloom until about 11 am the next morning which is pretty rare.

Here is something similar. It grows over my shed and had about 100 of these flowers this year. All at night.
This was taken early morning before it faded.

Nice shot BobL. With cactuses, it's quality, not quantity.

Is it perhaps a night blooming Cirrus (or Cerius)? My mother had one for years and then got tired of nurturing it all year for one bloom that she usually slept through, Although in later years it would have several blooms that would open on different nights. The plant was quite large when she gave it up and let it slip away.

Quite an impressive bloom and well worth the wait for a few years.

Forgot to add the link to mine of a few months ago. It put out 4 flowers over the span of about 2 weeks.
