    Hi RV,
I'm in the hills SE of Bungendore at about 850m so we usually only get a light dusting of snow once or twice a winter that usually melts within the day.

We have bull ants too but they tend to hang out on the ground away from the house. The jumping jacks are a bit smaller than bull ants and climb on everything...trees,bushes,fences etc so when you walk past or open the gate they jump on your hand and sting. The pain, heat and swelling can be quite bad and last for exactly 3 days. I found ice packs the only thing that helps. I nearly lost one of my dogs a few years back when she was bitten on the face. She was pretty sick for a couple of weeks.

I think I prefer JJ's and snakes to bears, wolves and big cats though!
(Although I've lost a few dogs to snake bites over the years.)

Those Jumping Jacks sound just plain nasty. Bull ants can't stand themselves when
I sprayed them in the face with OFF repellant. Wonder why?

The predators here take quite some time to decide if the cost/benefit ratio
is worth the fight. With all the big game hunting for moose/deer/elk/etc here,
gunshots mean gut piles but the preds will sometimes try to drive a hunter off his "kill".

There have been times when a bunch of "good ol' boys" have got all gunned up and followed
the country school bus to "regulate" a bunch of young grizz which were stalking kids at the school bus stops.
All is well. There was/is peace in the valley. Took a couple of hours but all the children were safe.

"Geez, Mr. Wildlife Officer! That Grizz got hit by a .338 cal logging truck."
Nobody blinks or they face the hot wrath of a bunch of country Moms.

Scary! Don't think I would have liked to have raised my kids in a place with big predators. Too scary for me!

Mostly, the big game animals are quite shy.
To see any of them at all is a surprise.
Often no more than somebody's butt-end disappearing into the forest.

The Brittle Gums that came down: where do they break?
At the limb joints or just anyplace?

We had two days of rain before the snow...so the trees that dropped completely did I guess because the ground was soft and the snow just tipped them over to the side with the most weight.

The limbs that came down were just random places on the tree...a lot of the trees here have ants nests in them so they have weaknesses. I don't know what these ants are but they REALLY STINK when they get disturbed.

Gee how weird......this thread just keeps leading back to ants!!!! Lol! I hate ants!

I keep looking at the snow building up on the peaks around my place.
It will soon creep down to the house (tomorrow?) but right now when
the clouds break = kind of pretty.
The wind and rain here is dirty (mountain rock dust). I washed most of the outsides of the windows
yesterday. Then the rain came again. Just about went nuts.

With company here, we have early meals and go "game spotting."
Sometimes there's many species to see, sometimes none.
I tend to compress all the beasts that I have seen over 10 years into 2 sentences.

I get ants in my little vineyard. Just little guys that live in the ground.
Why the Hello they can't move out into the grass/yard escapes me.

The Green Sea Turtle. Remember that? Two coats of MinWax Tung Oil finish on as of supper time.
Really shows off the wood grain of that piece of WRC. I'd sell it but the price would be only to someone who "needs" it.
Got the frame finished and ready to mount the 32" x 40" sheet of foam core for the background painting.
