    Part of the reason for the brevity of the experiment was that for roadway projects, right-of-way documents were in Imperial. Perfect conversion to metric produced practically molecular precision, and so was abandoned.

    Actually the US has had several daliances with the metric system, starting when it was introduced in the very late 1700's during the French Revolution. A number of early US military firearms had nominally metric screws, but inertia prevailed.

    Like 'Satute' miles, which are a US only measurement re-introduced when the US signed up with the Empire to have a standard International mile - someone decided it was going to cost money to convert all the existing maps & land grant documents, so 'they' fudged it.
