Default An odd thing happened at Bunnies today

I went down to the local Bunnies today and an odd thing happened, one of their staff came up to me and asked if he could help, I was gob smacked did not know what to say it has never happened before. I can only conclude that he must have been new to the job and in that still trying to impress phase.

    Hi Phil
You need to move up to Penrith NSW, we have two here and the staff are always asking if you need help.

At my Bunnings in Tamworth they ask all the time. Even all the old hands that can actually help you.

OK. So he asked if you wanted / needed help. That's a good start, but the few times I've bothered to ask questions of a bunnie-staffer I've gotten either a blank look, or an answer I KNEW was wrong.

So the real question is, was he able to help?

That's the really odd thing he was able to help and he even smiled.

Steady fellas. We're getting very close to "urban legend" status here.

I've always had reasonable service at Bunnies and I have been to many of their stores around Australia.

Yeah they usually are lovely and trying to help.

The problem is that they can't- They are either-

    i) Know-it-alls who really don't
    or
ii) Clueless and trying to find a know-it-all to help you.

I loathe bunnings because I think they are taking over and have a horrible monopoly on the hardware industry of Australia. Only one other store out of at least 3 still remains in our area... and it's dying.

Plus most of the tools for woodworking they stock are of a very poor quality. (Which can be said for MOST types of tools they stock)

That's why I wont shop there.
The employees ARE all nice though, I really must admit that...

I'm sorry you feel that way Eldanos, but I wasn't aware that De Walt, Makita, Sidchrome, Stanley, Bosch etc were poor quality. Sure bunnies have ""entry level" tools for the home handyman, but when you show a customer a $29.95 cordless drill and they ask is it as good as a Makita what am I 'sposed to say. I had a customer accuse me of being condescending when I tried to explain why there are no 1 metre extension cords and the shortest one was 2 metres, he thought I was trying to rip him off. The most common response I get when I show someone a tool is "is there anything cheaper?" and when I do "is it as good as the dearer one?".

I love my job at bunnies and it gives me a buzz when I know I've helped someone. Not all bunnies team members are know-it-alls, just the same as not all customers are difficult to help.

Fellas as bad as Bunnings - and Mitre10 before them - might be nothing, NOTHING compares to the evil Orange Borg............ HOME DEPOT! I swear I have never walked into a more hopeless environment than those places. The level of stupidity is matched only by the lack of service. I actually had the tool department manager of our local HD - 1.1km away - ask me if I wanted a job. NO BLOODY WAY! I only venture in there these days if there is absolutely no alternative. We're lucky in that there is a Rona building centre 2km away, a Home Hardware 4km, a Home Hardware Building Cantre 6km and a brand new Lowes just opened 7km down the road. Of course the "real" tool stores are a little further - Busy Bee, Markham Industrial and Lee Valley - as are the lumber yards but still for general hardware I'm lucky not to be locked into one option. Plus the nearby Rona will order in DeWalt, Makita, King and Freud items not on the shelves within a week. Nice folks.
Now having said all that about the evil Borg the people they trot out at wood shows are great because they really do know their stuff and they usually have some great deals on the products they offer. I just can't bring myself to go into one of their stores.
