new puppy!
A pure bred Maremma. About ten weeks old. The breed has an interesting history. Her name is Athena.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Are you using her as a stock guardian, or as a pet? She's lovely.
I saw a great piece on tv recently about a guy who had bonded one with a ... flock?... of endangered penguins on a small island, to protect the birds from foxes which had been munching out on them. It worked brilliantly. The dog had been raised with chooks, so I guess it figured the penguins were just chooks with their dinner suits on."Look out! Mum's in the shed and she's got a hammer!"

Stock guardian absolutely. I believe in getting a dog to do a job. I would never try to make this dog a 'pet'. The people who sold her to me came out to check out my farm before they would agree to the sale. This dog will live outside and watch over all the animals. And us, of course. I've read that unwanted people visitors will be stopped in their tracks.
I heard about the penguin thing. Very cool. When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

My sister (who lives in the country in Umbria, Italy) has had Maremmas for the last 15 years - all of them have been foundlings - how could anyone abandon these beautiful dogs?
Cheers
Jeremy

Kimba was very beautiful. And what a nice photograph!
Athena is settling in to farm life very nicely. She is a happy go lucky puppy and loves to play. She is eating like a horse and growing fast. She should be starting to lose her puppy teeth soon.
I can't imagine anyone abandoning a Maremma. They must be very common over there, but here in the US, they are not very common and certainly not cheap! When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

In western QLD, these dogs live with sheep in isolation and only see humans when the sheep are mustered. It's amazing, they have self feeders made out of 44 gallon drums. Some have been known to attack Jackeroos on motorbikes if they are suddenly surprised.
Cheers,
Howdya
