there should be a bleed screw at the top of the pump , which should be in a horozontal position , if you can't find the bleed screw loosen the discharge fitting on the pump to allow any air to escape , run the pump while you do this , you should be able to feel / hear the air escaping ,
these pumps will not pump air and need to be bled
the other posibility though very remote, is the pump is running in the wrong direction or the impella has been fitted wrong way roung
but rule no1 ,2 ,3 get all the air out of the systemAshore
The trouble with life is there's no background music.

Hi Robert,
don't worry about the height (depth) of the tank. The Davey XF pumps have a suction head of 7 - 7.5 m depending on the model. your pump will easily lift water from the bottom of your tank. As others have posted, you have air in the suction side of the pump. The most likely place that air is getting in is somewhere on your new priming pipe. I would remove the priming pipe and 'T' and replace it with an elbow, making sure that everything was air tight.
Make sure the foot valve (non-return valve fitted to the end of a suction line is a foot valve) is in the water. There is a priming plug directly above the suction inlet on the pump. Remove this and fill with water. Put the plug back in and turn the pump on and you should have flow almost straight away.
Make sure the foot valve is in good condition and seals properly and you should not lose prime again.
Hope this helps you sort it out.
These pumps cannot run for very long with no water before the seal is damaged. Avoid running it dry.Last edited by NCArcher; 15th November 2009 at 04:49 PM. Reason: Dry running warning.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

If there's no foot valve put shut valve on the outlet of the pump, without either of these it will just drain back down into the tank when switched off... you need to seal it like "putting your finger over the end of a drinking straw".
