I Don't know if they are on the rise in SA, I have a friend who owns 2 they are a license to print money. My friend showed me one the books he imports from Sinapore at 30 cents each and sells in his shops for $37.00 each, I can also tell you that there is no economic downturn in his industry.

Goes along with the casinos and table top dancing places. You can live a life just like James Bond.

I thought I'd read what's going on because I read two words, "sex" and "shops"
I make things, I just take a long time.

Hey, I do enough lurking around that other forum.

I've been noticing them since a woman was shot or stabbed in one in a Brisbane suburb.

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...11/2330953.htm

There were some connections with drugs or prostitution from memory, and I just started wondering what these shops were about and why so many of them were emerging.

If you're thinking the way I think you're thinking, those items were a big seller for the local wood carvers when I lived in PNG nearly 40 years ago. Lots of people bought them as novelties to sit on the shelf (so they said).

The first time I went to Brissy (from country Vic) many years ago I thought "Gee, there's a lot of signs for hardcore shops here".

    Turned out XXXX is "beer"

I have a friend who knew the poor woman who was killed. From what I have heard the only drug connection would be if the person who robbed her did it for drug money. It was just a shop open at night in a relatively isolated place with little security. Target waiting to happen really. Not too different from a late night servo in an out of the way spot.

The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

Rossluck be careful heard of a fellow who did similar to what your doing and ended up opening one up himself he got so hooked. he got out after 12 months couldn't stand it any longer.

I do notice that in your stats that Vic & QLD population v institutions is much greater than NSW.

You would have a better chance of scoring drugs at various brisbane restraunts than at an adult shop. It's possible some are involved in organised crime, years ago many were owned by money launderers, but so are a lot of other businesses, particularly computer parts retailers, restraunts etc..

The night owl at toowong used to get knocked off nearly every week. Plenty of poor souls who work late shifts alone in retail get robbed, assaulted or killed.

Many years ago these places seemd to be a haunt for men mainly but more recently more and more women I know are becoming customers.

Turnover seems to be low but as mentioned markups are ridiculous.

I lived in darlinghurst (kings cross) in my late teens/early 20's and many people I knew then were in the sex industry. When I moved to Brisbane I went looking for this "red light district" in the valley. I asked a coach driver for directions, he said "your standing right in the middle of it". Didn't stop laughing for quite a while. There are more brothels and sex shops in liverpool than in fortitude valley.

Rossluck: Hard to believe you live on the gold coast and don't come across this sort of thing daily. Perhaps you walk round with your eyes closed but the gc is completely vice ridden.

Hey! My eyes are open. I even saw you the other day when I was driving home in my Forester.

I stand corrected Peter. My own suspicious mind may have made the connection. Sorry if I offended anyone.

I should have mentioned that nearly all the other drivers were being remarkably sensible and considerate. I suppose were predisposed to notice the idiots amongst the good people.

"SWMBO and I went to one and the lady running it was a very friendly, helpful person running a small business. It wasn't seedy at all."

What he said! SWMBO was after some edible undies for a friend's 40th birthday gift, and the the lady running it earned top marks for customer service - not seedy, slimy or dodgy at all.

Having said that, I went into a couple in Sydney, years ago, to buy joke/embarassing items for a farewell gift to a co-worker, and those shops were pretty seedy.

    Cheers,
    Andrew
