Beer o'clock as villagers loot truck

    By PNG correspondent Liam Fox

People from several villages in Papua New Guinea's highlands have gone on a massive drinking binge, after looting a truck carrying thousands of cartons of beer.
Police say a truck carrying 4,000 cartons of beer worth around $150,000 ran off a road in Chimbu province yesterday.
The driver was unhurt but local villagers flocked to the site, ripped open the trailer and looted the beer.
Superintendent Joseph Tondop told the National newspaper his officers had to disperse crowds of drunks who had gathered on the road to harass passers-by.
Another eyewitness told the paper almost everyone from three nearby villages was intoxicated.
Superintendent Tondop said he hopes common sense will return when everyone sobers up today.

I was once riding my motorcycle to a plumbing shop to get an air return grill for my furnace. A beer truck had dumped a stack of six packs all over the side of the road across the street from the plumbing shop. I helped pick the six packs. The driver of the truck said that they had to pick up the cardboard and cases but they would have to destroy the beer (Out of their control and dirty, it couldn't be delivered to a store for sale.) and encouraged me to take some. I scooped up some loose cans and took them into the plumbing shop. As I went back for more, the beer truck guys were loading me up with more cans. About the third trip into the plumbing shop the owner yells at me. I said that it was for the guys in the back room and for after work. Then I ordered my grill of a size that wasn't stocked. The owner was still really irritated. I did take a full six pack home on my lap while riding the bike.
