Default Black Rooves ( or is it Roofs?)

Took a trip around a reasonably new large block development today and couldn' help but notice the number of BLACK rooves!! Both tile and CORRUGATED IRON.

Sun was belting down and temp about 34*C!

Do people put looks ahead of other considerations. I can't imagine the extra cost of keeping such a house cool!!

AAlso noted a large number of other dark coloured rooves - blues and greys.

I shake my head in wonder and think about the hoops I jumped through to get the appropriate sustainability rating.

I have noticed a few black ruves up here as well lately, I also wondered how hot it must be inside the house in the middle of a hot summer day.

One thing I learned a while back is just how bad plain galvanized rooves are.
Sure they reflect some heat but with the constant long hot days they heat up much faster than you might think and are worse than black rooves because they cannot radiate heat away easily. I did not believe this until a technical officer at work who runs a solar radiation simulator (basically a big chamber with a heap of 150W light globes that can shine on objects or surfaces 24/7) showed me some results. Unfortunately we had just reclad our house with the stuff

The best colour is plain white and they work best if they are occasionally washed. New shed is colorbond off-white.

I have a black roof on my place... it looks good (except under the aerial) and isn't a hot house
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.
