    Default Child illness adverts

    The thread I started about people only getting serious illnesses had a few people discussing their children eating dirt and others disinfecting all the time.

    This reminds me of another pet hate, adverts that imply you are a bad parent unless you buy their product.

    Basically, nobody advertises cleaning products unless it involves a mother ensuring that the kitchen is clean of "nasties" and if you don't buy their product then you are a bad parent.

    Which reminds me of another ad that annoys me which is the one where the kid squirts squash all over his mother so she retaliates with the hose from the kitchen sink. Quite funny up until then, but they clean it up with paper towels. Which get thrown in the bin, adding to landfill etc.

    Some are just stupid like the Viva (was just on) paper towel add you mention. Some just irratate me like the nurofen ad when they sit down and talk wonderfully about how it helps.

    Nutra-grain ads are targeted at kids, when they don't need extra energy, that bugs me.

    The toys that talk back in American, that is annoying and I haven't and never will buy my son one.

    None have made me feel like a bad parent though.

    What about all those American adds, that are dubbed into Ozzie, 'specially the ones for hair COLOR.

    I did a sound engineering course in a studio in Sydney years ago. They made their money from doing the audio dubs on yank commercials. The import regulations required that imported ads had to have a certain percentage of local content, so the easiest thing was to dub the voices and record a new soundtrack.

    I've noticed lately that a lot of the American soundtracks are sneaking through. Imagine what it's going to be like when the FTA comes into affect. Our kids are all going to be speaking with American accents and coming home from school asking for milk and cookies and a peanut butter and jelly samwitch.

    I thought the kid-vs-mum drink-&-water fight was an ad for the drink !

    The kid sprays a few litres on his mum, then the bottle magically refills itself for the next squirting. I tried to find it in the supermarket - it'd go real well next to the packet of TimTams that never runs out.

    The pair of adds that get me the most are the add for the all purpose disinfectants to be used on any surface. Vancomycin was the only antibiotic that did not have resistance to it and was the last resort in hospitals when people had infections that they just could not get rid of. Over prescription in the US was a big issue but it seems that the bugs that are resistant to it came from animal farms where a very very close relative of it was used as a feed additive at about 10 times the total amount that was used in hospitals.

    I have lived in America; their adds stink, as does an even greater precentage of the TV programming than in Australia.

    One of the most succesful adds for a boxer short company was run by Levi jeans in britain. At the end of an add for their jeans, the male model drops his jeans and bent over revealing the boxers he had on. Sales were neutral for Levi but the unrelated boxer companies sales soared.
