    Default connecting vcr to tv

have just purchased a new TV. Have a pre existing VCR, which was working OK with old TV. However, cannot get to playback on new TV. Have tried different combinations of hook-ups without success. Manual for new TV says " Video outlet lead should go in video input on TV" which have tried. Do not know whether arial should be attached to TV or video or neither. Video is approx 15 years old. Would also like to record from movie camera, but would appreciate just being able to watch videos. Should the AV/TV be turned on, on both units or just one. Hoping someone can help me, Thanks Jean Bloom

I think you will find that you will have to tune one of the channels on the TV to accept the video.

Use the AV leads and put a video into the player and start playing it and then tune one of your TV channels just as you would tune a TV Station.

It also should work if you put the aerial into the video in the RF in and then run a lead from the RF out on the video into the RF aerial into the TV. and then turn on the TV/VCR button.

Older TV's usually dont have AV inputs so the signal was run through the RF. (Old technology)

    Jean,

Does your VCR have a 'video out'? If so, you should hook that up to the 'video in' on your TV. Likewise connect the 1 (if a mono VCR) or 2 (if stereo) 'Audio out's to the corresponding 'Audio In's on your TV.

It's actually more common these days for TVs to have one or more 'Line' channels to choose from in addition to the normal TV channels. For example, mine has 4 Line inputs and I can select these with the remote as L1, L2, L3, and L4. Yours might have 'Line 1' etc. If it only has an AV/TV (or VCR/TV) button, you need to be set to AV. Likewise the VCR probably has one or more line inputs. This only affects what the VCR can 'see' and wont affect whether or not you can get the VCR playing through your TV.

The antenna cable only needs to go through the VCR if you want to tape TV shows. If so, the Antenna goes into your VCR and another cable connects from the VCR to your TV.

This is the best way to go, you get the best signal and less mucking around. The other way is to tune your TV into the VCR via the antenna cable but try it the other way first.

Whack in a tape so you know it's the VCR you're looking at and see how you go.

    Jean,

If it still doesn't work for you, maybe you can describe for us the following:

    1. The sockets on the back panel of your VCR - these should be labelled and additonally some of them will be coloured. You'll have some that take the larger 'coax' plugs and sockets that connect to the antenna and some smaller ones that take the plugs on the 'RCA' leads which are usually in pairs (red and white plugs or sometimes red and black), or threes (yellow, red and white).

    2. Likewise for your TV.

    3. The buttons on your TV remote.

    4. What leads you have.

    Good luck.

We have managed to get it all to work after 3 days of frustration. We still dont know how tho, a process of elimination with the cables I suppose ??????

    Anyway all OK now

    Jean,

suggest you obtain some white sticky labels and carefully label each lead and plug in point either marking labels with different colours or with letters (A, B,etc ) and do it ASAP. Do not wait until for some reason you have to unplug everything because I guarantee that you will forget until you've unplugged everything and then you will have to go through whole performance again to get it to work.

Don't ask me how I know this

    cheers

Hand the job over to your kids if youve got ém. If not then borrow someone elses.

Spent 2 years trying to get my wife's Japanese video machine to run through the TV set. Last month a friends 13 year old came for a visit and had the thing up and running in 5 minutes.

    Cheers Martin
