Default Didn't know you were having an election.

I just discovered that Victoria goes to the polls in 2 weeks. This was news to me:confused: . It hasn't had much coverage north of the border.

Do you have 4 year fixed terms like we do in NSW?

Is Bracksy going to get back in?

We probably haven't heard much about the Victorian election because our own State (NSW) politicians have been making enough news of their own to keep political reporters busy.

Its been pretty quiet hasn't it?

I reckon Steve will get back in... hasn't been doing a bad enough job for people to boot him and Labour out. The Libs have been pretty quiet and haven't mad a run against Labour yet, been a bit of bloodletting in the Libs as well.

When Melbourne's has just hosted a Commonwealth Games successfully, been voted the best city to live in and play sport in, has a very strong green credential, the trains run on time and the Govt fines the bejesuys out of the train company for not meeting performance targets.... there's not much else that people care about enough to get hot and bothered over.

For a Federal election, I think it'd be another issue. (fingers crossed anyway!)

wonder if this thread will go to the 'naughty room'?
    Cheers,
    Clinton

Like I said elsewhere Craig that despite being a commonwealth we really are completely separate states. Big news in other parts of the country only rate as minor items and vice versa.

Yes we are having an election as it comes around every 3/4 years. Min term is 3 years / max 4 years and at the date is at the government choosing.

As to who gets in is irrelevant, all politicians are equally bad, but what is intersting is the change to our upper house.

After decades Labour gets control of the upper house and then immediately reform same so that no major party ( including themselves ) will get it again but control will shift to minority groups and ratbags.

The upper house is divided into 8 districts, each electing 5 members on proportional representations like the Senate. Out of each district the Lib and Labour will each get 2 members and the 5th member could be anybody depending on preferences.

Really stupid. And this change is all without a referendum allowing people to decide.

They are now fixed 4 year terms.

Victoria: As a result of electoral reform in March 2003, the Legislative Assembly has a fixed four-year term. Barring exceptional circumstances, elections will be held on the last Saturday in November every four years (see Constitution Act 1975 s.38 and s.38A).
