Thread: Dishwasher - help

Dishwashers are usually set up with an upside down U in the drain pipe. This prevents the unit allowing water to run out of the machine down the drain. Could the top of the U bend be too high? So that after pumping out has finished there is a lot of water on the dishwasher side of the U bend that can run back into your machine.
Maybe also there was a change made to this discharge drain pipe that has altered the amount of water that can run back.

don't know what dishwasher you have but I put in a new elecrolux yesterday and the instructions made a distinct point to instal the drain hose with the hose fixed above the top of the dishwasher at the back of the machine before it goes to the sink connection.

They suggested fixing it to the underside of the bench top.

If that is the case only the water in the 800mm of the hose from the bottom exit of the washer to the top of the hose where it is fixed would be left to drain back.

Hope that helps but I would think instalation instructiuons for any brand would be satisfactory to stop your problem.

If I had to guess, I would say that the drain where the diswahser is connected is slightly plugged. Over time, cast iron drain pipes accumulate black sludge that is rather difficult to remove. As the diswasher attempts to pump clear the drain pipe fills up and allows the water to run back into the dishwasher.

Go to the drain clean out plug and force a running garden hose down the sewer pipe. Yeah, it's ugly and dirty but the hose will clean out the sludge.

Up here at places like your Bunnings, there is an attachment for a garden hose that helps. This attachment expands when the water pressure is turned on. When placed in the drain pipe it seals the drain pipe. As the pressure builds another valve opens in the device and pressureized water is applied to the sludge in the drain pipe. (I would try it without the expanding thing first.)

The dishwasher at home grumbles and moans all the time, so I dont untie the rope too often to let her off.
