Anybody here on Dodo ADSL?

I'm not interested in joining Dodo myself. My brother is with them and has been having problems with his modem dropping out. It's a Dlink DSL-200 and is connected via USB port. He has arranged with Dodo to swap this over for another Dlink modem with an ethernet connection. (currently waiting for it to be delivered)

What puzzles me is that the drivers supplied by Dodo with the existing ADSL modem and those downloaded direct from the Dlink site both appear to emulate a dial-up connection. The Dlink appears as a dial-up modem device under "Network" in Windows control panel (Win 98) and, when he opens Internet Explorer or Outlook Express, a connection dialog box pops up. If he completes the dialog, it connects (sometimes). But every time he closes IE or OE it disconnects. He then has to go through the dialog box process to connect again. Apart from that it also drops out frequently.

Of course it doesn't really dial up, it just makes the ADSL connection.

We tried changing the Internet Explorer connection settings to "never dial a connection" but then it won't connect at all.

Is this normal? I thought ADSL should be "always on".

Do they have tech support online as they provide the modem they should support its set up. Most do.

Other than that you may need to really go step by step on the instqll which is where i normally have trouble

.

Thanks for the link. Yes, Dodo provide support but my brother doesn't know what questions to ask. He's in Brisbane and I'm in Sydney, so it's difficult for me to help.

I notice from the link you gave that the DSL-200 modem supports Windows 98SE but not the original Windows 98 so that may be part of the problem. Installation instructions given are for Mac OS which doesn't help much. Anyway when the ethernet version of the modem arrives, the operating system should be irrelevant.

The thing I need to understand is how Dodo ADSL makes its connection. I'm with bigpond and mine is always on.

Those little usb modems are pretty lame I would get a decent dlink with ethernet and wireless.

Dodo are not known for a high quality service and their support response is usually a recorded leave your number and we'll call you back in 24 hours.

You get what you pay for.

Found the answer. I downloaded the manual and it is explained quite clearly.

To summarise, there are two alternative drivers, a WAN driver and a LAN driver.

If the ISP uses PPP (point-to-point protocol), you install the WAN driver. This emulates a dial-up connection. The modem appears as a conventional dial-up modem and uses the dial-up connection dialog each time.

If the ISP uses the protocol described in RFC 2684 (Bridged Ethernet), you intall the LAN driver. The modem then appears as an ethernet device. Connection is automatic just as with an ethernet modem.

From the above, I now assume that Dodo ADSL uses PPP.
