eggs are they free range
i buy free range egg, well that's what it says on the box.
the egg shell is so thin it makes me wonder.
i used to have chickens which were allowed into the garden so grit was freely available to them.
the shells on the eggs were pretty strong.
am i right in thinking they might not be free range after all.Cheers Fred

Free Range is now defined by a law stating the maximum number of birds grazing on a given area and meeting a few other prerequisites.
The fact that this density is set pretty high to suit commercial interests means that the legally defined "free Range" is way below the expectations of those of us old enough to have experienced the old definition of free range where it was not a full commercial operation on a large scale but a landholder trying to make a little money on the side.
If the box says free range then all that means is they were laid by chooks in the conditions prescribed by the law and nothing more. Yes they will be better than battery eggs or barn eggs but not as good as what you would get with a small flock in the back yard.I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

It's not just chook stocking density that determines egg quality - if the birds are fed a "budget" diet they will produce below average eggs.

OK
I've always believed that "Free Range" is little more than a male bovine excrement term that satisfies the PETA people who should be renamed PITA people that are costing you and I money at the grocery store.
I could go but . . . . .

you don’t say where you are but here in Vic if you have less than 30 chooks you can sell your eggs roadside, if you have more than 30 chooks you have to stamp the eggs with your mark and keep them in a temperature controlled vessel for sale(something weird like that) , but you can still sell them roadside either way, cheers
