Have you tried the local library Bob. I know ours have books on the various European Royal coats of arms and how they changed over the years as well as other books on heraldry.

Depends on what you want to do. If you imagine that you are entitled to 'Arms', you will not find anything useful in a book as such. You would need to be 'an Heraldic Heir' - i.e. first son of a first son etc back to someone who had matriculated Arms with the College of Heralds - that would be the English College, unless you are descended from a Scots Armiger, in which case you need to check with the current Lord Lyon, King of Arms for Scotland.

The scum who sit around shopping centres pretending to provide 'genuine' Arms to punters should all be charged with fraud, then drawn & quartered after serving several years hard labour. They are right down there with Nigerian Oil Ministers.

Having said that, if you want to assemble a plausable Heraldic Device, without claim to ownership, then I can suggest a quick trip to the local library. If you can find a book called 'Simple Heraldry Cheerfully Explained' I think this is the best Heraldic primer available. Most libraries have a copy of one of the books written by 'Fox-Davies', whiich are also quite good, with a fair number of illo's of Deraldic Devices, Beasts & etc. There are also a few books that just have a bunch of colour illustrations of Arms belonging to old families which can be copied. Unless you are a masochist, avoid Papworth's Ordinary of Arms - encyclopedic but 100% (small) text.

Our coat of arms shows "Leg Irons rampant on a Cat o' Nine Tails".

There is a mob that does it for you and gives you a book and a coat of arms sheild. I have one that my Dad got from them but after some research I didscovered there is no such thing for our family so might pay to do some research.

This is the one I have which is authentic but not for the whole family, just for Laird of Glenhuntly. Still I can pretend.

Actually when Zed researched his family tree he found out most of them were still living in it
