My son's up the road in Alexandra. He now has mobile phone coverage back and has been working to provide free wireless networking at the relief centre at the Secondary College. (Its main server registered an internal temp of 50 degrees C on Sat. btw).

For other ways folk can help see here

The Red Cross has two weeks supply of blood and say they're OK for the moment.

The NAB is providing a cash gift of 10 grand to folk who lost their house and had a mortgage with them and 5 grand for business folk who had a business loan and have lost it in the fires.
