Default Frustrating prices of some items in the marketplace

I know it is a buyer beware world but it gives me the pips to see some used stuff advertised in the marketplace at around the same as new prices.

If anyone was to ask us about the value of something advertised on gum tree or ebay we would call it as we saw it.

In general the prices are quite reasonable, I'm just annoyed that some members are getting poor value.

How do others feel about this?

if both the buyer and seller have no idea what the items fair value is, then so be it. the seller should have looked up comparable prices, and so should the buyer..its a do your own research thing. but then there are the selfish aholes that feel that the buyers ignorance is an invitation to reach into the buyers pockets and take a little bit extra +150% extra!!!. hopefully when the buyer gets the items back home and realises that he has been ripped off, he takes advantage of the consumer laws and takes the items back for a full refund making the jerk seller do twice the work with zero reward

For the forum, I operate on a totally different set of rules. Its naive, but I see this as a place of gaining value, wisdom and advice - not to skin my fellow woodies for as much as I can get.

When I want maximum price I use Gumtree and Ebay. I sell here at a LOW price, because I assume its for a Good Cause but also as others have returned the favour to me many times too.

Its a way of paying it forward.

I have an item for sale in the marketplace at the moment. I'm asking about half of replacement cost and that's negotiable as well. I feel that's a fair price or am I being unreasonable?

Selling by fixed price here is the only realistic option since there really isn't a big enough active membership for the auction system to work satisfactorily. On the other hand seeing cases where something goes cheap immediately it is listed while others lament the missed chance due to not having time to log on and see what is available is also disappointing. It comes down to trying to set a realistic price. I for one struggle to price things that I have sold here, for the most part I have targeted 50% of the retail prices I can find for something similar on local commercial second hand tool sites, but that doesn't guarantee a sale.

If stuff is of limited interest or over priced it just doesn't sell and it is hard to tell the difference sometimes. Gumtree is a good place to sell stuff that you want to get rid of at any price and not bother with pack and post etc. I treat gumtree as a dutch auction, just keep relisting at a lower price each time.

    Buys retail and sells wholesale......

    That sounds fine to me.
