    Default Best Knee-Pads?..

    Fellow Frustratees,

I've just posted this one over in the Renovate Forums, but given that an awful lot of "Toolies" aren't currently renovating, I thought it would be very wise to post it here as well..

So... the question is: I wonder if any of you can positively recommend (on the basis of personal experience) a particularly good brand and model of Knee-Pad?

Going by the problem I am having with my current unsatisfactory pair, I feel that the main criteria for selecting them might actually be how well the darn things continue to sit on your knees after you've both kneeled and walked around in them a bit (both in trousers/jeans or shorts...)

I don't have them here with me so I can't take a photo, but the type I have are black plastic, with flat ribs running across them that sit flat on the floor when you kneel in them. The cushioning is quite good, but the way they don't want to bend with your knees, but do want to slide off them when you move around, is quite hopeless .

The brand is either "Protector" or "Protecta", and I bought them from the BigB for a whole $16 or so about 6 months ago. I had a look on the "Protector Alsafe" website, but couldn't see them in the "Knee-Pads" section, so they might actually be "Protecta" after all. Anyway, if you know the ones I'm talking about, and you also happen to know that they're about as good as they get as regards to staying in the correct place on your knee, then please let me have the sad, blunt truth with both barrels...

    Many Thanks,
    Batpig.

    Hi
the best knee pads I find are the 12mm thick foam ones without a shell on them, and with largish velcro attachment, life of 12-24 months. The hard faced ones dont seem so good

    Dear Doug,

Is the Velcro in the form of strapping? If so, do they manage to sit still on your knees particularly well, or do they move around a bit?...

I've got Velcro straps on the current set - one strap above the knee and one below - and the buggers keep moving around on me. Perhaps the foam ones you're suggesting - without the rigid plastic facing like on mine - don't move around as much because they're more flexible with less of a mind to do their own independent thing...

    Best Wishes,
    Batpig.

I went through this a couple of years ago and spent a fortune on more and more expensive knee pads, until I was in the garden section at Kmart and they had green rubber ones, with a narrow, but soft velcro strap. I've been wearing them for quite a while, and often find I've still got them on when I come to take my pants off in the bedroom at the end of the day!

I'll try and remember to take a photo tomorrow.

And you'll need to empty the piggy bank, because I paid... $2 for a pair! In fact I bought 3 pairs!

They look just like this, only green. Here's an ebay version.
    Cheers, Richard

I have a great pair of Irwin knee pads, best I have ever had. They have a hard shell plastic outer with foam inside, a wide soft velcrow strap, the usual blue and yellow Irwin colours. I'm not sure what they are like with long trousers but I wear them a lot and half the time I forget I have them on. Very occasionaly if I am sweating a lot, I may get a litlle rollout but in general they are great. And they were not too expensive.

That is somehow exactly what I wanted to read in the opening line of a response! (Not that I would want anyone to have gone through that, but... well, I'm sure you know what I mean...) Consider a pair bought at that price!

Dear Claw - I don't suppose there's any distinguishing features about them (like single strap, etc...), because they do about eight different versions. I will certainly keep my eyes open for them when I go out on a mini-Spendathon once July rolls around .

    Many Thanks Gents,
    Batpig.

    Hi all

the square black $2.00 pads I have used and are fine, their failure is that they have a single strap with a bent DD clip which fails

the ones I like are similar to the irwin ones with a strap with velcro ends but without the shell in the pictured ones

    Dear Richard and Doug,

Thanks for the replies. No sweat regarding a photo Richard, because the Pads in the two links you provided earlier are identical enough to firmly implant in my mind what to look for at K-Mart. At that price I will definitely get a set...

    Best Wishes,
    Batpig.

Looks interesting, although you would end up with a lot of tape behind your knee which when bent for prolonged periods could be an issue. Weight lifters are only in the squat position for a short period. Could be handy when draging around a lot of big slabs though.
