Thread: Life is full of surprises

A couple of things have happened in the last few months that demonstrate to me that people are basically pretty good.

We had an Estonian exchange student a couple of years ago and when in Europe spent a wonderful week with him and his family. While we were in South America he and a couple of his mates came and stayed here with our son.

They wanted to stay for some 12 months or so and therefore had to get farm work.Due to my contacts in Leeton, where I had an orchard for a number of years and also taught ( mainly as a Teacher of the Deaf ), our son was was put in touch with a young fellow who has a set-up for backpackers. Now the son had never met this fellow but when Thomas explained who he was and what he wanted the young fellow said he would do anything for Arthur Russ. He even opened the facility to the boys for free. It had been closed because of the slowness of things. He also managed to get the boys work.

All this because I had taught his younger brother , who is hearing impaired! A great kindness I thought on his part as I had just been doing my job in teaching his young brother.

This week our son was given a job by a real estate agent. This agent is the son of a friend who was a fellow teacher in Leeton. This came about in an odd and involved way but - the reason he gave for giving Thomas the job was that I had been generous to him when he was a youngster. I had forgotten all about this but the young bloke had decided to pick some oranges to earn some pocket money. I told him I would give him $10 to fill a bin to a certain level. He laboured mightely, but being young and of slender build, he made it to about half way. I gave him $10 anyway. He has never forgotten!

Like most people I don't do things for reward, but it is sure nice to be remembered for the good things you happen to do.
