The version I heard was slightly different:
The monk was high in the mountains meditating when a voice boomed from the heavens 'what is the meaning of life?.
The monk replied 'solitude'. 'No' the voice boomed.
Peace was offered and the voice again boomed a resounding NO.
The monk thought long and hard and suggested contentment, again the voice rresponded with a deafening 'No' but this time added 'Too long, but as a clue only four letters'.
The monk pondered and then offered 'Fire'.
'Yes' boomed the voice, 'And now, 36 across.......
Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

    Squizzy,

    42 comes after 41

If that's not the answer -
