    Default Mobile phone insurance recommendation

Teenager + broken phone = misery. I swear this lad is going to have a good career in damage / break testing

Just wondering if people use mobile phone insurance and if there were recommendations from personal experience or the industry.
Home contents may be an option as a specified item but would have to decrease the excess to make it worthwhile.

Most specific phone policies won't cover loss and theft generally needs to be from a locked house or vehicle. Also phones need to be new for some of the policies.

The deal I made with my kids is that a phone should last two years. If it is lost or damaged before that time they pay for replacement. Son managed to get two phones wet, he paid for replacement. Daughter lost phone (in school bag) I bought a replacement as a birthday present. Later on lost phone was found.

When you can buy a phone for under $100 it is not worth having insurance.
Perhaps your son needs to look at buying a mobile phone outright.

Ok so i probably should have given some more info. Agreed $100-200 phone no insurance, no problem. I am not talking about the same thing as you both here, this wasn't a text / talk emergency phone that parents give kids so they can remain in contact. He put together his savings and bought his own phone outright so its a tad more than $100 and less than 9 months old. He worked at saving the money up , had an accident with the phone and its toast and not worth a repair. Expensive lesson learnt : expensive phone requires insurance or a back up plan. His savings didnt really recover from the purchase to the point that he can go an replace it. I am not giving him a replacement . I will work out a situation with him where he can contribute to and pay back the replacement cost and hopefully give him some motivation to try a bit harder on the job search front.

I guess i was looking to here from people who have used products from the telco's insurance or a place called covertec for insurance on the replacement

20 years ago, the wife was on a plan with Optus that included insurance. In those days I don't think you could buy a phone easily outright. Anyway she left the phone on the roof of the car, it fell off and when it was recovered from the police station it was no longer working. Yes the insurance did assist in replacing the phone, but after a few years of paying a monthly premium, I could see it was money that could be saved.

Insurance is like gambling, you pay your money hoping not to claim.
