Workshop Technician Needed

I need a workshop technician to maintain and service a Design and Technology Centre in a Perth private high school.

We have up to date workshop machinery in both woodwork and metalwork and require someone to maintain these machines as well as do some prep work for teachers, ordering and odd jobs.

A trade background, an ability to work with teenagers (great fun!!!) and even an ability to do some teaching would be great.

See Saturday's West Australian Newspaper (26/04/08) in the Education section and Trades section.

A great way to get access to a fully equiped workshop for your own projects as well.

Maybe a woodies 'retreat' style setup?

Weekend of WW, turning and other related stuff. Do you have accommodation or could you link it with a deal with a hotel or B&B?

The woodies retreat sounds perfect.
But while I'm quite competent on a woodlathe that is the one area I'm not confident about teaching. I suppose I need to study some turning teachers.

We are accustomed to accomodation and service and expect to operate as a total weekend package retreat.

Location is an interesting question,
the fringe of Melbourne may be better to reduce travelling time.
We are 2 1/2 hours from the Westgate Bridge, and convenient to many tourist localities , see here
So I suppose even the family could come as tourists while the woodie is making sawdust. Even Mt Gambier is a comfortable day trip from here.

You may be able to attract some turning teachers by offering free accommodation for the turner and partner for the weekend plus a bit of the takings. You could also look at getting a gubbermint grant, if they give $100k to someone to make a girls surfboard, then....

Pottery weekends too. Raku firings- but outside the fire season I guess. Pit firings would use up some of the sawdust from the turning classes. Other arts and crafts. Drawing and/or painting retreats. Life drawing. Basket weaving with found stuff. Dying fibers with natural stuff. Botanical drawing. Etc etc. Music composition retreat. Sometimes groups who are rehearsing for a performance like to go away for weekend of concentrated rehearsal time. Need a piano for that. Not for you to teach it all. Get experts in. The charge people more.

Same here....

The computer mob in Cairns, that I now work sub-contract for, have managed to loose 3 good contracts over the last year so my computer work is a bit thin now.

I'm going to get a shed sorted out & do a bit of extra turning & see if I can ramp it up a bit & maybe stock some stuff & do some tuition.

I've sold stuff at the markets & unless you have something small/cheap/novel, it is a total waste of a weekend.

I've also sold stuff through galleries.
I've found 1 out of 3 are worth it.
The others damage or loose stuff or pay the wrong person for the sale.
The one closest to me at present has been good & they are asking for more of my work.

Just had another thought, "Kids with cancer" have some retreats that families can go to for rest and relaxation. Probably not lucrative but im sure the appreciation would be there. Teach them something and your website shows plenty of "attractions" close by.

Dont know how you contact them or anything but something else to consider.

IMHO being 2 1/2 hours from Melbourne is an advantage. I'd be unlikely to require accommodation if you were half an hour away. I'd also like the idea of getting away from Melbourne to do something like this.

Having something close by for SWMBO and the kids to do during the day would be a major advantage and enable more woodies to convince the boss this trip is a good birthday, christmas or fathers day present.
