Thread: MP3 FM transmitter

I think I'm confused.

Do MP3 players actually come in FM transmitter form?? I don't think so, that doesn't work with the consumer conspiracy.

Buy an iPod or whatever, (No memory sticks needed, they all have flash memory or hard drives these days as far as I know), then you have to buy an FM transmitter gismo as well for another hundred bucks.

I've got a transmitter gismo that the bloke in the shop gave me 'cause he couldn't sell them. It's old technology of course, and plugs into the headphone socket of anything.

I use it sometimes to broadcast MP3's from my powerBook to my Bang and Olufsen workshop stereo.

Don't you have any kids you can ask this stuff??

My 18 year old daughter had to get Miss 12 to set up her MP3, and sorry, no idea.
In our small town I have a reputation as some sort of electronic guru.............but not with MP3, well out of my league.

next you'll be saying the grundig on the ride-on. Mate you're not confused you're bleedin' spoilt and it's already too late for you, cause if it ain't got valves you've already been sucked in to vacuous technology.

Don't want to spoil your day too much but I'm sure that Grundig is just an el cheapo Korean brand now (or is it Telefunken?)

No, we have a chap to do the mowing!

The B&O is now 28 years old, I can't get the turntable fixed, and it has four programmable FM channels (which is four more than there were stations when I bought it), but the speakers and amp are as fantastic as ever.

It'd still be doing the honours in the living room, except my beloved likes surround sound and the feel of a big sub-woofer under the seat.

I thought about selling it, but it's the only thing I know that will out-noise the thicknesser!

With tech the way it is, as soon as I open my mouth there's probably a product out there that will prove me wrong.

So, no comment except - drop into a Dick Smith or Harvey Norman and quizz them.

From my experience (probably outdated) lotsa mp3 player should have an expansion for SD memory and the FM transmitter will be an additional unit. Like "Midge said, Ipod is all there, and the FM transmitters are good. Do you need a transmitter, does your car stereo have a input jack you can use?

Bloody tech - I've not paid any attention to tech/electronic consumer items (I am a communications tech) for about 18 months, and now I don't even know what specs I should be looking for in the new computer I want.

Wouldnt it be easier to install a new head unit in the car that has Mp3(just about all cheapys do it nowdays).
Or is your car a newer aust model that has a poxy intergrated sound system... next it'll be wierd offset stud patterns so you cant fit aftermarket wheels

Skip the FM transmitter if at all possible. The sound is lousy IMHO. Try for an Aux Input. The latest Fords have them as an option. I don't know about others. An altenative is a gizmo that slips into a cassette player.

Would something like this fit the bill?

It's just that going from an SD card, through the MP3 player, into a transmitter, into the car stereo is just asking to get ugly.

If something like the above is not available, I'd be looking to wire into the existing stereo rather than use a transmitter. Just less clutter and potential places for it to fall apart.

If you can put it together Jaycar, and possibly Dick Smith have a "Minimitter" I think was the name of it. as a kit , line level in and transmit anywhere on the fm band, They can also be bought for items like ipod as a specific item but the kit one is universal.

Most car radios could be modified for Aux in if you connect a switch and line in to the top of the volume control

Yea Doug is right, Jaycar have them or even Dick Smith/Tandy (a recent merger) its the same kit that guitarists use to play electric guitar and transmit the sound to a nearby FM reciever instead of having to buy an amp. I made one for a friend years ago.
The tape things you insert into the deck will only reproduce tape quality sound as the signal needs to be converted to magnetic energy (for the tape heads to pick up) then converted back into electrical energy for amplification to the speakers. FM transmition at short range is usually alot better than magnetic heads (tapes)

I wanna buy an FM transmitter to play MP3's through my car stereo, the only catch is I want it to take Sd memory cards, cos I got them. I don't wanna buy memory sticks etc. if I don't have to.

Where you say you want 'it' to take Sd memory cards, do you mean the FM transmitter or the MP3 Player? I can't understand how you would hook memory up to either. Do you have a computer in your car?

If you want a simple FM transmitter with a 3.5mm Jack (headphone) or whatever plug you want just let me know and I can make one for you probably cheaper than anything you can buy in a fancy plastic box.

I used to make FM bugs so a quick change to the mic input circuit is all that is needed to accept an inline signal instead. PM me if your interested.

Sorry for the delay in getting back, I've been working flat out. HAd Christmas day off, but boxing day and since has been a bit hectic.

I shoulda explained better.

What I do is this.
I have a lot of audio type books in MP3 format. I can burn them to cd's, which I've done in the past, and listen to them that way via the cd player in the vehicle.

However it takes a shellacking load of cd's for a 16hr book.

My idea is to put the MP3's on on an SD card, because I have them. Then play them on the vehicle's radio via the transmitter gizmo.


Yes I'm being a cheap skate, I should just buy an MP3 compatible stereo, but it's a work vehicle, and I don't wannta.
