    Default Noisey Upright Freezer

I got given this Westinghouse upright freezer.
It seems to work okay but it makes pops and bangs - the pops are just a loud popping noise but the bangs are like a hammer on a peice of timber, loud enough to be heard throughout my 2 bed duplex and sometimes as often as every 40 minutes.
All the freezer has in it at the moment is icecubes and the thermostat is set on about half.
Is this noise normal or does it mean the freezer is on its way out - I don't want to load it up with food and have it die on me.
    Cheers

Ours makes a bit of noise like it has a live animal locked in it. Sometimes hear it during the night if I am awake. It causes some of those what the...... moments and I get up and check for uninvited visitors. True story

I have a Fisher & Paykel fridge and an upright freezer that both do the same thing. I believe its just the defrosting system working, the ice falling into the evaporation tray making the banging noises. They also make wheezing, tummy rumbling type noises. Not quite sure what that is but I know when there are no wheezing or banging noises it signals BIG trouble. Ask me how I know.

If the freezer has an automatic ice cube maker, the bangs are just the ice dropping into the bin.

Over 30 years ago we purchased a cheap Russian made 5 draw freezer. Works a treat and in all those years it has never missed a beat and and is as quiet as a church mouse.

I was dubious when we purchased it and asked the shop owner what the warrantee was like he said it was 2 years and in the 20 years of selling them, they had never had a complaint from anyone about them. Also said they were made in what used to be a tractor factory.

    Cheers

    Auto Defrost?

Same sort of sounds came also come from low gas or TX units releasing valves which allow gas flow
