    Default Dangerous place to live

This morning the maid came to work at the house and looked quite shaken. She informed us that two men working on a house restoration directly across the road from where her ex lives - and only a couple of hundred meters from her own place- were shot and killed by a man riding a motor bike'

We surmise that this was drug related.

Then we heard another story this afternoon that two more people were murdered on the outskirts of the town about 5mins from here.

    Drugs again.

There are a few SE Asia countries where drug offences are considered capital. I've often wondered if that was an appropriate solution for our drug problems.

You can't afford to let your guard down at anytime these days especially in some parts of the world that have developed a reputation.

Be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for anyone taking an interest in you or your general area especially if you are a foreigner to that country or area. If you are a foreigner you tend to broadcast your lack of knowledge if you are not careful and this could encourage those looking for an easy mark.

Im old enough to remember Singapore as a cesspit of drugs and prostitution. The government of Lee Quan Yew got in and strung a few up. He made his country a civilised and respectable place.
Being tolerant is fine but it leads on and on and there always must be a point of " This far, No further".

    Artme,

My rellies that live in Brazil claim that the price of getting an average person killed is about $20 and sometimes that includes killing a couple of wrong people in the process.

I don't know how true that is but it makes you wonder what the price is here in Oz?

    Stay safe

I reckon if you looked hard enough you'd be able to find someone that would do it for a 4 figure number. Probably wouldn't neccasarilly do a good job though.

Artme if you get any pens made to sell or give away over there and they question the finish etc - just offer them another - arguing might not be healthy

    Stay safe

Oh, I'd better point out that wasn't an offer either.

I read in a magazine ("Time"??) about how kids as young as 9 or 10 are recruited as hitmen, and often have to prove themselves by killing their predecessor, who has made the mistake of living to nearly 18 (and thus become arrestable, chargeable and jailable).

It even interviewed some of their mums - some were horrified, but couldn't see any way out of an impossible poverty-driven situation, and others were proud that their kids could bring in some money for the family.

    Exclamation

The whole poverty/ drug situation is very disturbing here.

I read a report of these assassinations in the paper this morning. They gave some statistics for this region that are truly frightening : to date 230 murders of which 23 are known to be assassinations!! That means by the end of the year there could be in excess of 250 murders in a population base of *00,000.

Our nephew's wife had a cousin who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
She was at a party and felt tired so she went to her friends place nearby to sleep. The owner of the house ( not present) owed drug money. All three occupants of the house at the time were shot through the head, all totally innocent.

The only "lucky" part was that there were some outsiders who were able to give descriptions and number plates to the police and the gunmen were caught.

The Olympic thing has been worrying a lot of people here.

You may have heard or seen of the case here where a police helicopter was brought down in Rio with 3 police losing their lives. It was shot out of the air with a military weapon. Of course the reaction of the world press was immediate and much mention was made of the Olympics, as this happened just after the announcement.

The Brazilian media tended to be dismissive of foreign concern, pointing to terror attacks in London, and the fact that no- one had suggested London lose the games.

I see the problem here as being very serious. Rio is a very densely populated city. The Favellas - slums- where these problems arise are huge in terms of population. 300,000 in the biggest of many. They are built, generally on steep hillsides, have a maze of narrow streets navigable only on foot, and are well
    guarded by the drug barons.

While most of the strife is turf wars and debts it still bodes ill for the reputation of the city and peoples confidence that things will go well.
