Thread: Reminder to clean your A/C filters for summer

Giving the evaporator (inside head unit) and condensor (outdoor unit) coils an annual clean is good practice also. I use a product called "Viper"; you spray it on and watch it foam up like shaving foam. It then just dissolves into liquid; and in the head unit will run down the drain line giving that a bit of a flush also. You can also gently spray water onto the indoor coil to help flush the drain line.

Coil cleaners can be expensive though; Viper in an aerosol is available from Actrol and Reece plumbing but costs >$30 a pop. I've just seen that Simple Green now make one in a hand sprayer for $16 and is available from Bunnings. It's twice the liquid for half the price so I might splash out on a bottle and do a comparison with the "professional" product when I'm home next month.

I do mine in April and October for the cooler and warmer weather changes.

Any particular brand is it? I’m looking for a replacement one, I’ve heard there’s a couple to steer away from.

Panasonic, Daikin & Mitsubishi are all good brands that should give you no issues. I personally fitted Panasonics in my living and dining rooms as at the time they had a redemption offer that made them the most cost effective.

The best feature to look out for are VSD's on all three motors (inside fan, outside condensor fan and compressor). These maintain the unit at optimum efficiency and keep the running costs down. Of course if they fail they are somewhat exxy to replace but that's why you go for the better brands; less chance of failure, a good guarantee if they do and good material support.

This is my opinion only and not the opinion of the forum or implied as such. The brand is Bonaire absolute rubbish has not worked since day one cheaply manufactured, Climate technologies will not honor the warrantee
Day one did not work Tech OH has to be reset, intermittent fault has persisted for 9 yrs CT will not acknowledge the fault, replaced three pumps, pump not covered by warrantee, fan coupling failed twice. the touch pad has now failed, sorry don't make them any more $700 to upgrade the control system

From my experience you can add Fujitsu to Chief Tiff’s list. We have a ducted system for 12 years and a split system for 6 years both are inverter types and never any trouble.

We have 6 Fujitsu splits and I have had Daikin as well and experience with Mitsubishi. I like the Fujitsu remote because it says what it does in words unlike the others which use stupid mysterious icons. The modern splits cost pennies to run and hardly register on our electrical supply data logger.

Not all Mitsubishis are made the same. Mitsubishi Electric are a better made machine than Mitubishi Heavy Industries.

For cleaning the inside fan, does anyone have a recommendation?

I've previously used Simple Green on coils, inside and out and it was highly effective.

My new place has serious goo on the fan blades...

Clean it every month and replace the filters every 100 days and you will have a long serving air conditioner at your disposal.

Depending on the model and installation location, it might be possible to remove the outer cover and then get access to remove the fan motor assembly. They sell "kabi-killa" sprays here - mould killing spray, that works reasonably well, though if it is heavy mould you will need to remove the fan. Youtube is great for how to's...
