Thread: Best way to remove ticks?

Apparently,with a pair of tweezers grabbing it as close to its head and removing horizontally and not straight up.Try not to squash it in the process.

You can buy specialised tick combs that act a bit like the nail remover on the head of a hammer, usually cheap plastic things that lever the head of the tick off the area (I'd expect the dog version would work equally well on humans). We don't get paralysis ticks where I live but we were advised by the vet to always follow up a tick bite with a vet visit.

The advice of a medical specialist to my wife (who now has an allergy from a paralysis tick bite) is to use Wart-Off Freeze Spray available from a Chemist. It kills them instantly. Then you can remove them with the tick remover.

I have seen someone use aftershave, by pouring a small amount on/near the tick, it backed out of the hole in the skin it was digging. Then it was caught and killed.

A dab of Eucalyptus Oil makes them back out after a few minutes.

turn them into crosses.. got that in before Allen

Other options I've seen recommended are a paste of Permethrin powder (ant dust) to knock them out before they can inject back in or using a loop of dental floss to quickly lasso under the head to avoid the re-inject reaction when squeezing the body with tweezers. Not everybody has a wart freeze pack on hand.

Going beck to my boy scout days of the 1950s.

Burning their butt with an extinguished match would cause them to back out.
A drop or two of alcohol would cause them to back out.

I would guess that a cigarette would work also.

Must have been OLD SPICE
