What the'ell do they expect. P*ss all support for farmers over many years, no support when the 2 major grocery chains slug out a milk price war and farmers going belly up.

The price of buying a farm or extending your own farm is out of reality, specially with world prices on stock and grain, the overseas people come in waving big $$$$$ around what would you do.

Watch this space when the population v's food supply gets further out of hand.

[we, the population, will get ahead of the so called genetically modified gains]

"He who owns the land will look after their own first - any "leftovers" will of course be sold to the highest bidder" or swapped.

When our so called leaders have sold off the farm completely or allowed it to happen - what happens then?

Even though I won't be around to see it - I can guarantee that it will end up very ugly for the "have-nots".

I'm not totally sure what the real solution is but the current solution to our problems does not seem a really smart move to me.

Is it just me who finds it very strange that what we allow others to do in our country what we are not allowed to do in their countries.

    Just some thoughts.

    So what are the choices?

Does anyone, including the wonderful National Party senators, suggest that a farmer who wants to sell his land , should not be allowed to sell to the highest bidder?

What are the alternatives? A government takeover of farms perhaps?

If push comes to shove, you can't export agricultural produce from Australia without an export permit, and it's up to the government to provide those.

"the total number of agricultural businesses in Australia on 31 December 2010 was 135,600. Of this total, 133,600 agricultural businesses, or 99% of Australian agricultural businesses, were entirely Australian owned; 1,300 agricultural businesses had some level of foreign ownership; and 732 had an unknown ownership status." 7127.0 - Agricultural Land and Water Ownership, December 2010

"the total area of agricultural land in Australia on 31 December 2010 was 398 million hectares. Of this total, 353 million hectares, or 89% of agricultural land in Australia, were entirely Australian owned, 45 million hectares had some level of foreign ownership and 0.3 million hectares had an unknown ownership status." 7127.0 - Agricultural Land and Water Ownership, December 2010
