My tele's broken

Pushed the button to turn on my tele ... and nothing happened

The tele (a Sharp) is at least 12 years old, might be as much as 14, so she doesn't owe me anything.

The on/off on the remote hasn't worked in years so we always turn it on and off by pushing the button on the tele itself. Pressing that button now does nothing - no lights, no sparks, no puffs of smoke, nuffin

The cord is wired into the tele, so it's not a loose power cord. I've tried it in power points that I know work and that hasn't fixed it, in fact, I've got the ancient portable currently working off the power point the big tele uses, so it's not a dud powerpoint.

The tele hasn't been moved or bumped or anything strange like that since the last time we used it (this morning).

There's no external sign of a fuse.

I'm a complete dope when it comes to electronic stuff (I still subscribe to the smoke theory ... only this time, I didn't see the smoke escape

)

Any thoughts?
Anyone know what repair costs are like?
If a new tele is the way to go, what do I look for and what should I get? Last time I looked at televisions I ran away screaming in confusion

Money is a problem because it'll have to come out of my house deposit (just part of the 'frittering away' process I guess).

my telly is mono/colour
green & white though sometimes another colour pops up

occaisionally I get the bug to buy a new one

then I visit a friend and realise its still 99% crap programming

been toying the the idea of internet telly though

Buy a small cheap new one and keep it in the bedroom.

Depends what size you are after.
I bought a cheap brand 51cm TV out of a supermarket about 4 years ago, when they were sellng around $170. It is still going great.

Personally if I had to buy another TV, I would just go to Kmart etc and grab the cheapest biggest size that I wanted, as long as it has the warranty (would spend more for a longer warranty).
As far as I am concerned, everything today is made out of too much plastic , and nothing is built to last. Even if somethiong is repairable, half the time, it is just cheaper to go out and buy new one, and you have the warranty to go with it.

After saying all that, my father told me about 4 years ago, after talking to a Tv repair guy, Panasonic (at that time) were the least likely to come back for repair, asd the fancy flat screen (traditional cathode ray type) TV's were more likely to pack up

Don't worry about it - no loss at all - there is nothing worth watching on most of the channels.

Pick up an elcheapo for the odd time when there may be something worthwhile - which the broadcasters will still try to destroy with mindless tripe advertising - better still, record what you want and blast through the ads at super speed.

Those, so called, 60 minute programs are only 45 minutes - therefore you pick up 15 minutes per hour which can be put to better use in the shed.
