    Default What's available in Melbourne and environs - machinery?

    A friend has family coming over from NZ and they are interested in machinery. Anything from farm machinery to steam engines. So far I have thought of Science Works museum and the Newport Train museum. Can anyone add to the list? All help appreciated!

    Dates are from 20 to 30 Mar.

    What about coming to Eastern Woodturners " Wood, steel and steam " festival on the 24th & 25th March 2012 at MONT DE LANCEY HISTORIC HOMESTEAD, 71 Wellington Road, Wandin.

    Bound to be of interest for him and you as well. I'll be there as I'm a member of Eastern Woodturners.

    Unfortunately the Railway Museum has been closed for some time due to OH&S issues.

    Missed out by one day, this is usually well worth the time to see but is open other days with out all the extras.

    This is an amazing show but it was on last week. Missed it myself! Think its open on Sundays or something as well, but not as big a showing! Oh just read. March 25th "operating day." They have some big steam engines that live there.

    Puffing Billy runs every day of the year except December 25th. Can be accessed by car or public transport (bus and train). www.puffingbilly.com.au Four trains each day from Belgrave, 3 to Lakeside and one continues to Gembrook.
    I am rostered there on Wednesday 28th March.

    ScienceWorks is open each day 10:00 to 4:30 It is possible to see inside the engineering workshop from the viewing alcove. Sewerage Pumping Engine runs (if operator available) Mon - Fri with tours and Sunday. The garage area is open for viewing daily and they may enjoy a tour of the store (available depending on weather and guide availability, numbers are limited so need to book on the day - no extra charge).

    If they are down Geelong way, the wool museum could be worth a look.

    National Wool Museum

    Great old carpet knitting machine, had me mesmerised for an hour. Could have stayed and watched it all day.

    If visiting Geelong the Ford Museum is worth checking out. It is within walking distance of the Wool Museum.

    Not sure if the people are interested but there is the RAAF museum at Point Cook. Entry is free. Interactive flying displays are held at 1pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. I think you will need private transport to get there. (Not open Monday.)
