    Question Why

if you should get a sparky to do your electrical work, a plumber to fix your water problems and a gas fitter to install gas appliances why are public allowed to buy all the relevant bits and pieces, do the job themselves and run the risk of prosecution, voiding insurance policies and at worst, killing someone???

At first thought it does seem a bit crazy but..............how many times have you known blokes do it themselves and have a tradesman mate sign off?
Often I'd rather trust myself. I've had to point out to a tradesman when his apprentice connected a pipe the wrong way round. We would have been in the #### literally if it had been let go.
Most of Australia would be living in humpies if we had to wait for a trademan with a slot in his order book.

Both valid points Wheelin' and Jim.

What I was really implying is that the law, as we all know, is an ass.

Actually the answer is very simple. It has to do with the section of the Commonwealth constitution prohibiting restrictions on interstate trade. These items used to be (and can easily be reverted to) made in one state and then transported to others. It never was made and sold in the same state. Hence it could not be prohibited.

This law (constitution) was made with the consent of the voters and can only be changed with their consent. So blame the voters if you must.

I'll buy the gear, but I'll have trade qualified mates either install or check my work (I prefer that they do it as it is quicker). My mates are not afraid to tell me when I have not done something to code as I am not afraid to speak up when they are not up to code in other mutual areas.

    Thumbs up

Yes Sturdee the constitution can be used quite selectively.

There are many examples of the stupidity of constitutional and state laws relating to trade and, as we have so frequently seen, changing the constitution is a very difficult task. State laws are another matter. With those we are more the hostages of political whim or the interest of powerful lobbyists.

It is very easy to say "blame the voters"( even with a cynical grin attached.)

I did not vote for the constitution, and once politicians are in power they seem to pay little heed to the electorate.

Wouldn't it be great if we had a system in this country whereby we could have a recall system like they do in the States? Might shake up the complacent jerks who polish the expensive seating in the various houses of parliament.

Because the law only deals with installation or use of in the context of installation or repair. .

Other wise any body who had said parts, objects etc would require a license to possess. This would included Bunnies and all suppliers and no doubt the manufacturers to boot.
