Thread: What would be the Worlds greatst workshop

My Work Centre would include much the same as yours, but the view would be a rolling green patchwork of fields and woods.

I would have a full metal shop including laser cutter, 5-axis CNC mill, CNC lathe and all the usual MIG/TIG etc. As well as a toilet/shower, I would include a kitchen and bedroom. There would be no telephones, but I'd have a wireless network across several 'puters including the latest Work Station for my CAD.

As the notion took me, I would produce furniture or vehicles.

I hang out here a bit so im probably a bit biased, but theIdeal Tools workshop is a real cracker. Almost my dream workshop. The only thing missing is the 52" Plasma for the footy and cricket. (coming soon i hope)

I had the ideal workshop - an old two-classroom school 5km out of Tumut. It had two large classrooms that could be opened up to one by a concertina door, two small rooms at the ends (storage & finishing), a verandah on three sides, four overhead powerpoints in each room (plus plenty on the walls), views over rolling farmland, plenty of natural light, heating if required, separate toilets (boys & girls), tank water on tap, far enough from our house & neighbours not to disturb anyone, on two acres. Plenty of room for timber storage underneath.
Unfortunately, I was dragged kicking & screaming back to Sydney. I kept it for a few years, but every time I went back there the tenants had done something else and it broke my heart, so finished up selling it. I'll post a pic if I can find one.

I would love that workshop!!!
One feature I would add is large, south-facing windows, to maximise the natural light without geting direct sun - also on the same theme, skylights with frosted glass on the northern side of the roof.

I would also like to be able to get good ventilation through without using fans, so windows and doors are important.

Where to start with my dream workshop....hmmm....well I think it'd be something that would evolve in my mind over time as I delve deeper into woodworking. Obviously the tools and everything would be nice, but I reckon the best and first thing I would want is location. No neighbours around that get annoyed, a nice bush or forest setting which is just relaxing and peaceful and I think kind of fitting as we are turning all this beautiful timber into useful & equally beautiful creations. A view where you can just sit down and contemplate whatever is on your mind, or nothing Throw in a couple of essential tools and I'd probably be right to just sit there and tinker away!

I've seen photos of some people's workshops on the forum here and they have some great views and locations, man I envy those people!

Reads like a beaut thread just to daydream thinking about it and forget what I was/am/could or should be doing.

Ive got the world's best shed, similar tyo Woodwould's with extras.

Trouble is its in me head

I work in mine.

Im developing my dreamshop now... setting up ready for my retirement while Im still "youngish" enough to cover the cost with lots of overtimes(1 extra 12hr shift a 8 day week), dont think I wana be working molten metal when Im older and worn out!

The plan so far,
Buy block of land just out of town with nice view, check
put up little garden shed(80x40x12') fully insulated, check
water tanks(2x 5600gal), check... half full already
put in many tree's, 200ish so far
build the workshop(30x40'),underway
put in wooden floor in workshop, underway I really bit off more than I can chew... but Im still chewing slowly and surely

To do list,
Wall off the workshop and line it completely ready for the aircon(and insulating it more again)
Put DE pipe work/power/air under woodfloor
Build a 20x10' leantoo off back of shed to house the DE/aircomp and the "turning room"
Build workshop cabinets
Concrete the remaining 50x40 of the shed
Toilet/shower
Build a couple small rooms for us to live in while house gets built, one will be a kitchenette the other will be converted into a finishing room once house is done.
Install a large wood rack made from all the "studley's wood" Ive accquired

and the list goes on and on... be retired before I know it
