Default The Art of filling and a Mitre Plane.

So after having been manipulated into doing domestic choirs, which I find quite below my standards, this morning.
I was a free radical this afternoon.
So ,after consulting with my well detailed plan,
I set out the mouth opening at 20 degrees.
We also set out the little triangle things each side of the mouth.
Ian W should be along shortly to tell me what they are exactly ,I hope.

So , first things first , the sole was unceremoniously cut in half, cuts cleaned up with a small fine file, all looking good if I don’t say so myself .
Next was the 20 degrees bed angle, this was first roughly cut into before the bastard(love being able to say that)come out and cleaned most of the metal away.
Then ,it was boredom time with a small single cut file
Filing in line with the sole, then across the mouth ( draw filling) to check for flatness and rinse and repeat 200 times.
    I didn’t actually count them but !!!

Then I had a brain wave, as apposed to a brain fart.
And by using a piece of HSS steel , I had rapped with a bit of 80 grit paper , I found lying around,
And if I set the sole up in the vice at the right angle and use the back jaws of the vice, I can do this.

Sorry , I didn’t take more pics , but basically I just pushed the HSS back and forth with the paper underneath to check for flatness.
About then, I’ve started to take up praying.

Next , was the little triangle things, some do a tongue and groove, I’ve seen some with neither(I should have done the neither).
They are still not right, and they are quite fiddly to do.
I was starting to get close, but I will have a better look tomorrow.
Because I was getting little over it.[emoji3064]

Now my lesson learned today and for anyone going to make there first metal body plane.
*Don’t do one with a stupid bloody tight mouth*.

Do any other style of plane you want with huge gigantic mouths that you can put a file in.
Lesson learned , the hard way, hope this doesn’t bite me latter.

    Cheers Matt.

    Cheers Matt.
    Or an adjustable mouth.

I found the further I got into the build and the more time I'd invested in it the more nervous I became about silly mistakes.
I made two of them drilling the rivet holes but nothing I couldn't recover from. I was on a roll and cracking on with things then oops.

That’s interesting you say that Tony,
I remember your build,an thought it was clever how you did your adjustable mouth.
An was thinking before I started this build about doing an adjustable mouth immmmmm.

Your very right the anxiety starts to creep in the further you get into a build, I start fretting over all the time so far.
I really should just look at the time element as skill building,ie enjoy the ride, not the end.

    Cheers Matt.

Ok a little side digression, and bets to be laid,
Last night while you were all busy with more important stuff.
Mountain Ash, and myself, came to a gentleman’s agreement, were as I will be using some Bloodwood donated by Mountain Ash to stuff my plane with.
And Mountain Ash sometime soon ,hopefully, will be able to commence making a hammer tapping thingy for planes with some Brass I’ve sent him.

So , lay your bets on Australia Post lol.

Item was handed to Australia post at 11/08/20 10.48 am.

Now the lady behind the desk tells us 2 days!!!!!!
But ,she would also say 2 days if Mountain Ash lived in Siberia.

Items are going from Glen Waverley ,Victoria
    To The Dandenong’s ,Victoria.

A drive on a Sunday morning that would be under 1 hour.

    Cheers Matt.

    Matt

You have a right to be sceptical. Items can inexplicably be re-rooted (no spelling error there) via Darwin where they are creating a niche market for themselves.

    Regards
    Paul

Ps: 5 days. Mmmm: Takes us to Saturday. Make that 7 days.

My predisposition to have faith in our great institutions makes me say two days, just like the lady said.

Gentleman. Timber was posted at 16:24. I'm hoping that they both take 2 days to arrive at respective addresses but just got a card today from my mum (Wonthaggi - Sth Gippsland area) she posted 2 weeks ago. So who knows??

We have Lance being diplomatic at 2 days

Mountain Ash in for the 2 day punch

Simplicity is going for a fair 4 days.

And on other notes I have diligently moved forward slightly with some ,you guessed it Filing.
The Sole dovetails were marked out with a slope somewhere between 1/4 1/6 but I basically just winged it with that’s looks right approach.
Using my sliding bevel from my tool bag.

A few things I’m learning it takes no time at all too take away 90 percent of the waste it’s take quite a bit of time to go the last 10 percent.
    File check check file repeat.

But progress is progress and I really only spent about an hour maybe an hour half today on it.

    Cheers Matt.

Looking good so far Matt. I will be following along with interest.

Parcels sometimes do some zigzagging and other times backtracking, my guess is 5 days, unless it is handled by the same folk as took care of my saws along their journey, in that case it could be 5 weeks .

I'm guessing 4 days. 2 days as quoted and 2 extra for additional Covid-19 procedures. I hope they get it there quicker then you can have it finished ready for Friday's lunch time zoom meeting.
Those were the droids I was looking for.
