Thread: Bulk Brass Order
-
2nd October 2008, 05:22 PM #136
I am glad to report that Kevjed and I got the last bits of brass from George White today.
I am also happy to say that everyone should be getting some weighty packages in the mail over the next few days. We were a seen with the two of us huffing and puffing caring these huge meter long packages into the post office.
Big shed, I have your two pieces of brass rod and I will bring it to the turnfest or the wood show. Bobl, Kevjed has your 1900 mm length of 30 mm rod for when you come to Melbourne. RayG you would be expecting two packages, as your share was over 23 kg's and had to be broken into two packages, as expected. Caliban you ended up getting 100 mm pieces of the lever cap material, because we had some remaining that was not used up by the saw kerf.
This has been one of the more difficult bulk buys to organize, and I would not be keen on doing another one anytime soon. It has however most education as always. Thanks again to Kevjed for without his help, non of this could have ever happened.
Now the race is on to see who is the first to make a beautiful beast from all this shiny brass.

Hi folks,
as TS said done and dusted. Lots of cutting up with the hacksawfor the levelcap stuff. A bit more today with the Rod then wrap and post.
Please don't forget that we owe a big thank you to lightwood for sharing his plane making experiences and expertise re the appropriate choice of brass for the plane sides. Thanks Peter you saved us all a lot of money, time and frustration.
I'd like to also encourage all to have a look at lightwoods website if you get the chance. The planes he makes are wonderful. He also has a wonderful collection of historical hand planes and is a real, earthy fellow with a passion for life and learning. A personal vote of thanks from me Peter for allowing me to visit and have a chat about your collection, plane making, tool making and life in general. You are a generous soul and a highly skilled, artist/tradesman ....and not a bad bloke. So thanks.
Happy tool making folks.

If anyone who bought some of the 25 x 19mm bar has any left over from their projects I am after 1 or 2 small pieces about 50mm long for some clamps I am making.
Willing to pay.

Hi Mat, it is a shame you did not ask for some 19 x 25 before.
I will be going back to George White in the next few months, I can pickup a small piece for you if you like.
I did not have enough funds this time, but I need to pick up some rod in assorted sizes and lengths.

Thanks TS
It's always going to be the way that new needs crop up. A bit like buying tools.
Please let me know next time you go.

Hi TS,
Another first, the guy's at the post office kindly offered the use of a trolley to move some heavy parcel's that arrived today. (never knew they had these nifty little trolleys!)
Thanks again for organizing the group buy, and special thanks to Kev for all the help. And as other's have already acknowledged, --
The invaluable advice from Peter (Lightwood) to steer us towards the correct alloy, and providing the inspiration and encouragement to have a go. -- thanks Peter.
Regards
Ray

For anyone looking to buy small pieces of brass have a look at
www.oztion.com.au
type brass in the search and a seller called off-cuts galore has multiple pieces on an ongoing basis.
