    Default Chunky bits of tool steel

    The yard owner where I mill has a serious woodchipper that can chip a tree trunk up to 18" in diameter.

    The blades in the chipper look like these;

    If you look closely at the smaller one you can see a crack. This happened when he was chipping some acacia and has resulted in one of the big blades (not the one in the photo) losing a cm chunk out of it as well. Anyway, the outcome of this is he has replaced all the blades in the chipper so there is an interesting stock of about a dozen tool steel blades like these which he says I can have.

    The sizes are
    267 x 125 x 13 mm
    and
    267 x 95 x 10 mm

    The width of the larger one is 100 mm from the edge of one bevel to the start of the next bevel. This looks like it could be suitable for plane blades of some kind. Bevel angles are 30 degrees.

    I have no idea what sort of edge this stuff will take, I expect it could be some kind of D2 type steel, tough as all get out. I will test the hardness tomorrow at work. When I get a chance I will cut a slice of one of these with my metal cutting TS and try and see what sort of edge it can generate.

    If it works I will consider offering pieces of these for a small (and I do mean small) fee.

    Default Chunky pieces of tool steel II

    I measured the hardness today at work and these blades are between RC 60 and 62 which is interesting as it makes it slightly softer than the D2

    But what is really interesting is I found out this evening that a lot of chipper knives are made of a steel called A8 which is almost the same as D2. It's very slightly softer than D2 but tougher to take shocks. So I guess they will be a pig to sharpen but will prove an interesting comparison with the D2!

    They could become known as the BobL stay sharp plane blades

    Or Bobl chop your fingers of real easy - these things are quite blunt, but their weight makes them rather vicious!
