Interesting : Cone Pulleys & Split Variable Speed Pulleys
Hey,
These are interesting things.
Split Pulley Variable Speed Drive - See attached JPEG - Google search shows that they seem to be commonly used in industry
Cone Pulleys : KMODDL - Kinematic Models for Design Digital Library
Might be worth considering instead of step pulleys next time you build something that needs variable speeds.
Were split pulleys used on lathes before electronic speed variation was readily available ?
Anybody ever used either of these things ?
Now to declare my vested interest : Have robbed the pulleys off my drum sander to trial my shopnotes lathe and am still looking for best possible way to have variable speed drive lathe so I can give pulleys back to drum sander. AT the moment they give me a perfect 1000rpm and 2000rpm when swapped. Good enough for learning basic spindles and initial faceplate exercises.

Hi Steamingbill.
The split pulley arrangement I known was used in a place where I once worked, there are probably similar near you. It was used in coal feeders, where the output drive turned a drum containing pockets (so measured quantities of coal could be metered out). The split pulley (and hence drum speed and coal feed rate) was moved by a pneumatic control system which automatically controlled boiler firing rate.
I always assumed that the split pulley arrangement was a fairly common, pre electronics, continuously variable speed control mechanism where DC motors were not wanted.
Regards
SWK
PS, I just recalled, I reckon my lathe, MC900 type, has got a split pulley speed control anyway (duh!)

Correct about MC900 and similar. Google [reeves drive] for variations.

These split pulleys are also used on Shopsmith combination lathes for speed control.
