    Default Crosscut sled

An article of mine on a crosscut sled has appeared in the current Australian Woodworker. As well as describing how to build the basic sled, the article shows how to equip it with attachments for tenoning (see photo below) and making finger joints. I have to say that, ideally, it is preferable to build dedicated tenoning and box-joint jigs; but the sled attachments are a quick and easy solution, if you do not have sufficient reason to build the dedicated jigs.

Congratulations on finally getting the article published, from what you've said in another post it's been a bit of a wait. Without articles from craftsmen like yourself these mags would die, so you would think they would have a different attitude.

Yes, good one Rocker. Haven't opened my copy of Australian Woodworker yet, only discovered it had arrived this morning. When I have my new shed, I'll have room for lots more sleds of various types. The slab is being poured today. Do you think 96 square metres will be enough to house all of your jigs?

    Darren,

I think you might just sqeeze them in. My shed is 108 square metres, but it houses a couple of mowers as well; however, the current wisdom is that size does not matter - it is what you do with it that is important

I think ideally that you need three crosscut sleds - one with a narrow kerf, one with a broad kerf for use with a dado set, and one with a 45° kerf for cutting mitres.

    108? I feel so inadequate

I came up with a novel (I think) way of cutting dados on the bottom of a sled to take the runners so that they cannot help but be parallel to the fence. I might publish it one day.

Size doesn't matter. Look at Wood Borer, he has a small one and certainly produces the goods.

I've only got 35 square metres.

I was reading it this morning. Very good.
    Thanks.

Just and aside: I wonder if the publishers realise that the binder they sold me no longer takes the new magazines.

    Great news Rocker,

My shed Wood working area is 54 square meters, mowers etc.. evicted to newly built tacked on after thought

BTW rocker I will be building your morticing jig this weekend, and for the life of me I can't remember if I actually thanked you for sending the design through to me. If not I apologise and would like to doubly thank you.
